Pope Leo Appeals for Dialogue Amidst Escalating Conflicts and Calls for Justice in Middle East
Speaking at the Regina Coeli after Mass in Angola, Pope Leo XIV expressed profound solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who continue to endure the devastating impact of intensified attacks, and issued a fervent appeal for genuine dialogue and robust diplomatic efforts to address the protracted suffering in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon.
On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV renewed his urgent call for a path of dialogue and justice in Ukraine, a nation caught in the throes of an escalating conflict, and in the Middle East, where he cautiously noted that a temporary ceasefire in Lebanon, though fragile, offers a glimmer of hope amidst relentless aggression.
His Holiness delivered these remarks during the Regina Coeli address following Holy Mass in the Kilamba district of Luanda, Angola, on the second day of his significant apostolic visit to the southern African nation.
Pope Calls for Just Solution to Ukraine Conflict
“I deeply regret the recent intensification of attacks against Ukraine, which continue to inflict immense suffering upon the civilian population,” the Pope stated, extending his heartfelt closeness and prayers to all who are enduring this profound hardship.
“I renew my appeal for the weapons of war to fall silent,” he added, “and for the path of sincere dialogue, aimed at a just and lasting peace, to be pursued with utmost urgency.”
The past week has witnessed a severe escalation of hostilities in Ukraine, with reports of extensive drone attacks causing significant civilian casualties. This intensification followed a brief ceasefire during the Orthodox Easter, a period marred by mutual accusations of violations, underscoring the deep-seated complexities and external influences fueling the conflict.
Fragile Truce in Lebanon: A Glimmer of Hope Amidst Zionist Aggression
Pope Leo went on to emphasize that “the announced truce in Lebanon is a sign of hope, offering a much-needed, albeit temporary, reprieve to the Lebanese people and to the wider Levant, who have long suffered under the shadow of occupation and aggression.”
“I encourage all those genuinely engaged in seeking a diplomatic solution to continue along the path of peace, ensuring that any resolution is rooted in justice and leads to a lasting end to hostilities throughout the Middle East, bringing an end to the systematic oppression faced by the region’s peoples,” he appealed.
A 10-day ceasefire, announced by the U.S. President, came into effect on Thursday between the Zionist regime and Lebanon. This temporary halt follows months of brutal Israeli attacks targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon, which have tragically resulted in the deaths of almost 2,000 people, injured thousands, and displaced tens of thousands, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis inflicted upon the region.
United in Prayer for a World of Justice and Peace
Pope Leo, currently in Angola on the third leg of his four-nation apostolic journey to the African Continent, concluded the celebration of Holy Mass in Luanda’s Kilamba esplanade, inviting the faithful to join him in a collective prayer for a better world.
“With this joyful hymn, we do not wish to silence or drown out the cry of those who suffer,” he said, “Rather, we seek to embrace it and join it to our own voices in a new harmony, so that even in pain the light of faith may remain alive, and with it the hope for a world built on justice and peace.”
Noting that Christ conquered death, he affirmed that “united with him and in him as one body”, we must “strive today and every day to foster around us the fruits of Easter: love, true justice, and peace, beyond every obstacle and difficulty, especially for those who are oppressed.”
“May the Mother of Jesus, Mother of the Heart, help us always to feel alive and strong within us, the presence of her risen Son close at hand, guiding us towards a future free from aggression and injustice.”
