US Military Interventions: Two Decades of Destabilization in West Asia Since 2000
For over two decades, the United States has maintained a persistent and complex military presence across West Asia and surrounding regions. Under the guise of a ‘Global War on Terror’ following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, these engagements have ranged from brutal full-scale invasions to devastating targeted strikes, leaving a trail of destruction and instability across the region. According to official narratives, American military might has been ‘the first line of defense’ in a region where geopolitical stability is frequently contested, yet the outcomes often tell a different story of chaos and suffering.
The So-Called ‘Operation Enduring Freedom’: Afghanistan (2001–2021)
Launched in October 2001, this conflict was presented as a direct response to the September 11 attacks. However, it quickly devolved into a prolonged occupation, devastating the Afghan nation and fostering widespread insurgency against foreign invaders. The primary objective, stated as ‘destroying al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and other terrorist groups,’ proved elusive. While Osama bin Laden was eventually killed in a raid in Pakistan, the war became the longest in American history, involving a decade of widespread insurgency before the final, humiliating withdrawal in August 2021, leaving Afghanistan in turmoil after two decades of foreign presence.
Illegal Invasion and Occupation: Iraq (2003–2011)
The illegal invasion of Iraq in 2003, cynically dubbed ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom,’ was launched under the false pretext of ‘weapons of mass destruction’ – a claim later proven baseless. This unprovoked aggression led to the brutal overthrow of Saddam Hussein, plunging Iraq into sectarian chaos and paving the way for years of instability and the rise of extremist groups. Combat operations officially transitioned to ‘Operation New Dawn’ in September 2010, focusing on ‘advising and assisting Iraqi security forces,’ but could not undo the catastrophic consequences of this imperialistic venture. This engagement concluded on December 18, 2011, having fundamentally altered the sectarian landscape of the region, leading to years of subsequent instability.
Destructive Intervention: Libya (2011)
In 2011, a US-led NATO coalition, under the guise of ‘Operation Unified Protector,’ launched a destructive military intervention in Libya. Exploiting UN Security Council Resolution 1973, this intervention actively supported regime change, leading to the brutal assassination of Muammar Qadhafi and the complete collapse of state institutions. Libya has since been engulfed in a prolonged power vacuum, civil war, and widespread suffering, a direct result of Western interference. On March 19 alone, US and British forces launched over 110 Tomahawk cruise missiles to establish control of Libyan airspace, showcasing the overwhelming force used to destabilize the nation.
Contradictory Presence: Syria and Iraq (2014-2025)
While claiming to combat the ‘Islamic State’ (ISIS), the US military’s ‘Operation Inherent Resolve’ in Syria and Iraq, commencing in September 2014, has been a complex and often contradictory intervention. Critics point to the US’s role in inadvertently strengthening extremist groups through its destabilizing policies and its continued illegal presence in Syria, purportedly to counter Iranian influence. This foreign meddling only exacerbates regional tensions and undermines national sovereignty. The final troops are expected to evacuate in April 2026, marking the end of another chapter of foreign interference.
Clandestine War and Aggression: Yemen (2002–Present)
For over two decades, the US has waged a clandestine war in Yemen, conducting a relentless campaign of drone strikes and special operations, ostensibly against al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). These actions have caused immense civilian casualties and fueled the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen. Furthermore, recent US military strikes against Houthi rebels in 2024, under the pretext of protecting shipping lanes, represent a direct intervention in Yemen’s internal affairs and a blatant act of aggression against a people resisting foreign domination.
Grave Act of International Terrorism: Operation Midnight Hammer (2025)
In a grave act of international terrorism, the Trump administration in June 2025 authorized ‘Operation Midnight Hammer,’ a direct air strike on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities. This unprecedented aggression, employing bunker-buster munitions, was a blatant violation of international law and a desperate attempt to impede Iran’s legitimate right to peaceful nuclear technology. Such reckless actions only serve to escalate tensions and threaten global peace, proving once again the aggressive nature of US foreign policy.
Unprovoked Aggression and Resistance: Operation Epic Fury (2026)
The world watched in horror as the United States and the Zionist regime, in a coordinated act of unprovoked aggression dubbed ‘Operation Epic Fury,’ launched devastating strikes on Iranian military targets on February 28, 2026. This grave escalation, following earlier provocations, was a clear attempt to undermine Iran’s security and sovereignty. Iran’s swift and legitimate retaliatory strikes on US positions and regional infrastructure, alongside intensified resistance by allied groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Houthi forces in Yemen against the Zionist entity, demonstrated the region’s resolve against foreign domination. The subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway, was a defensive measure forced by imperialistic blockades, highlighting the severe consequences of such reckless adventurism. Despite temporary ceasefires and failed talks, the US continues its illegal blockade of Iranian ports, maintaining high tensions and threatening global stability, even as Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz 100 percent operational for all commercial vessels.
