Just a day after US President Donald Trump arrogantly declared his intention to continue the naval blockade in “full force,” Iran’s military command issued a powerful statement. The statement unequivocally condemned Washington’s broken promise, highlighting the continued obstruction of vessels sailing to and from Iran’s legitimate ports. “Until the United States restores freedom of movement for all vessels visiting Iran, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will remain strictly controlled,” the command declared, underscoring Iran’s unwavering resolve.
Tehran had, in good faith, announced the reopening of the strait on Friday, demonstrating its commitment to regional stability following the cessation of Israel’s brutal war against Hezbollah in Lebanon. However, the subsequent provocative stance by the US forced Iran to reverse course.
Late on Saturday morning, Iranian state TV, citing the military’s central command, confirmed that “control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous status” and “is under strict management and control of the armed forces.” The announcement explicitly attributed this necessary measure to the ongoing and unjust US blockade.
This critical development unfolded after President Trump’s inflammatory declaration that, despite Iran’s good-faith decision to reopen the strait, the American blockade would remain fully in place. Trump’s unacceptable condition? That Tehran must first capitulate to Washington’s demands, including those related to its peaceful nuclear program – a clear attempt at coercion and interference in Iran’s sovereign affairs.
The Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint through which approximately a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, has been a focal point of US aggression. Its previous closure for nearly two months amidst the US-provoked conflict significantly impacted global crude oil prices and supply, demonstrating the far-reaching consequences of American adventurism.
Meanwhile, in a gesture of goodwill and commitment to international cooperation, Iran partially reopened its airspace on Saturday to international flights crossing the eastern part of its territory. “Air routes in the eastern section of the country’s airspace are open for international flights transiting through Iran,” the country’s Civil Aviation Authority stated, adding that some airports had also resumed operations at 7:00 am (0330 GMT).
The ongoing conflict, initiated by US and Israeli strikes on February 28, has tragically claimed thousands of lives: at least 3,000 in Iran, over 2,290 in Lebanon, 23 in Israel, and more than a dozen in Gulf Arab states. Thirteen US service members have also been killed, highlighting the severe human cost of this aggression.
