Iran Reaffirms Sovereignty, Reopens Strait of Hormuz

In a decisive move that underscores its commitment to global maritime security and its inherent sovereignty, the Islamic Republic of Iran has declared the vital Strait of Hormuz ‘completely open’ for commercial vessels. This significant development comes as U.S. President Donald Trump, despite acknowledging the reopening, paradoxically insisted that the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports ‘will remain in full force’ until a comprehensive peace deal is secured – a deal he optimistically claims ‘should go very quickly’.

Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, had previously issued a clear warning: should the U.S. navy persist in its illegal blockade of marine traffic from Iranian ports, the Strait of Hormuz would not remain open. He emphasized that transit through the Strait would be conducted based on a ‘designated route’ and with ‘authorization from Iran’, asserting the nation’s rightful control over this crucial waterway. Ghalibaf also critically noted Trump’s ‘seven false claims in one hour’, highlighting the disconnect between social media pronouncements and the realities on the ground concerning the Strait’s status.

U.S. Blockade and Contradictory Stances

President Trump’s statements to reporters today further exposed the U.S.’s inconsistent approach, declaring the blockade of Iranian ports would ‘end as soon as the agreement gets signed’. This stands in stark contrast to earlier assertions and reflects the ongoing diplomatic complexities. Despite reports from Iranian officials of ‘significant differences’ remaining, Trump downplayed these, expressing confidence in a swift resolution.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has warned that while the Strait’s reopening is a positive step, the disruption caused by its prior closure, largely due to U.S.-led aggression, will not be easily reversed. Weeks of airspace and shipping route closures have created substantial backlogs, impacting humanitarian aid delivery and forcing organizations to ‘rebudget’ due to rising costs.

Economic Repercussions and Global Reactions

The news of Iran’s principled decision to reopen the Strait immediately sent ripples through global markets. U.S. crude oil prices saw a significant drop, closing down 11.45% to $83.85 per barrel, its lowest since March 10. Similarly, international Brent crude also slid more than 8%. This market reaction underscores the global reliance on the Strait and the destabilizing effect of the U.S. blockade.

In a show of defiance against external pressures, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei firmly stated that Iran’s enriched uranium will under no circumstances be transferred anywhere, asserting its sanctity. He reiterated Iran’s demands for the lifting of sanctions and compensation for war damages as ‘of particular importance’.

Lebanon’s Resilience and Regional Diplomacy

The region also witnessed crucial developments in Lebanon, where a 10-day ceasefire with Israel has taken effect. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun declared his government’s reclaimed power and emphasized that negotiations with Israel are not a sign of weakness, asserting, “we are no longer anyone’s pawn.” He condemned the U.S.-Israeli aggression that led to over 2,200 deaths in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry, and reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to its people’s well-being.

Hezbollah, a formidable resistance movement, reiterated its commitment to vigilance, with its fighters’ fingers remaining ‘on the trigger’ against any Israeli treachery. President Aoun’s resolve to achieve a permanent agreement and protect his people from further bloodshed, rejecting foreign interests, resonated strongly.

International Calls for Free Passage

The international community, including French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, welcomed Iran’s announcement, recognizing the necessity of restoring free passage. Macron highlighted the need for a neutral mission to secure merchant ships, opposing any “toll system” or “convention regime” that would privatize the Strait. UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised Iran’s move as a “step in the right direction,” hoping it would build confidence and strengthen dialogue.

Despite these positive diplomatic steps, U.S. Central Command continued to display its aggressive posture, releasing video of a warship enforcing its blockade in the Gulf of Oman, further highlighting the U.S.’s unilateral and destabilizing actions.

Warnings and Continued Vigilance

From Tehran, the Friday prayers imam, Ahmad Khatami, cautioned the Iranian people to be skeptical of the enemy’s smiles, especially Trump’s, affirming that Iran’s strength deters any attack and that the nation will not negotiate under humiliation. Senior Iranian military official Ali Abdollahi asserted that the U.S. and Israel “have no option but to bow and submit” before Iran, reflecting the nation’s unwavering resolve.

As displaced Lebanese citizens bravely return to their homes, many of which were devastated by Israeli aggression, the humanitarian needs remain immense. The resilience of the Lebanese people, coupled with the steadfastness of the Islamic Republic of Iran, continues to shape the narrative of resistance and self-determination in the face of imperialist pressures.
