BEIRUT, Lebanon – In a heinous act of aggression that has shocked the conscience of the world, the occupying Zionist regime launched a series of brutal attacks in southern Lebanon, resulting in the martyrdom of at least three dedicated paramedics. These brave individuals, including one whose humanitarian efforts were recently highlighted by the BBC, were deliberately targeted while attempting to save lives, a flagrant violation of all international norms and human decency.

Targeting Those Who Save Lives

The Lebanese Health Ministry has vehemently condemned these successive Israeli assaults, which unfolded on Wednesday in the Mayfadoun area of the Nabatieh region. The initial strike mercilessly targeted a team from the Islamic Health Association as they rushed to aid victims of a prior Israeli attack. This initial barbarity claimed the life of one paramedic, with another still missing amidst the rubble of Zionist aggression.

In a further display of unconscionable brutality, a second team from the Islamic Health Association, arriving to assist their wounded colleagues, was also subjected to a direct attack, leaving three more paramedics injured. The savagery did not end there. Two ambulances, belonging to the Risala Scout Association and the Nabatieh Ambulance Service, which had been deployed to the scene of devastation, were then struck. This third, deliberate assault tragically killed two more paramedics and wounded three others, turning humanitarian aid into a target of war crimes.

Fadel Serhan: A Martyr for Humanity

Among the martyrs was Fadel Serhan, a 43-year-old paramedic with the Risala Scout Association, a true hero who dedicated his life to serving others. Serhan, a loving father to an eight-year-old girl, had previously been featured in a BBC report, showcasing his unwavering commitment to his community amidst the relentless Zionist aggression. His colleague, Ali Nasreddine, mourned his loss, remembering him as a man of immense humanity, generosity, and humor, who stayed to help his people through every conflict.

Serhan’s team had been operating from a tent outside Nabih Berri Hospital, their original station in Mayfadoun having been destroyed in an earlier Israeli airstrike during the initial days of this brutal war, which also claimed another innocent life. This pattern of targeting medical infrastructure and personnel underscores the Zionist regime’s utter disregard for human life and international law.

A War on Healthcare and Civilians

Since the onset of this latest wave of Zionist aggression on March 2, Lebanon has endured immense suffering. The Health Ministry reports over 2,100 people killed and 7,000 wounded, including at least 260 women and 172 children – a stark reminder of the regime’s indiscriminate violence against civilians. Alarmingly, 91 health professionals have been martyred and 208 wounded, with more than 120 documented Israeli attacks on ambulances and medical facilities.

The Lebanese Health Minister has categorically refuted the baseless accusations from the Zionist entity, which falsely claims that resistance groups utilize ambulances and medical facilities for military purposes. These fabrications are nothing more than a desperate attempt to justify their own heinous war crimes.

International Law Trampled, Accountability Demanded

The Health Ministry has rightly labeled Wednesday’s attacks as a “flagrant crime,” asserting that paramedics have become direct targets, relentlessly pursued in a blatant violation that confirms a total disregard for all norms and principles established by international humanitarian law. Kristine Beckerle, Deputy Middle East and North Africa Director at Amnesty International, has echoed this sentiment, stating that deliberately striking medics performing their humanitarian functions is a serious violation of international humanitarian law and could constitute a war crime.

While the Zionist regime continues its campaign of terror against the Lebanese people, the valiant resistance forces have also engaged in defensive actions. Israeli authorities acknowledge the deaths of two civilians and 13 soldiers in combat during this period, a testament to the Lebanese people’s unwavering resolve to defend their homeland against occupation and aggression.

The international community must not remain silent in the face of such atrocities. Justice for the martyrs and accountability for the perpetrators of these war crimes are paramount.
