Ankara, Turkey – In a significant development for regional stability, Turkey on Sunday voiced strong optimism for the extension of the two-week ceasefire between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States. This crucial truce, set to expire on Wednesday, is seen as a vital window for diplomatic engagement, allowing more time for comprehensive talks between the involved parties.

The international community is closely watching as Pakistan spearheads preparations for further high-level peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, following an initial round that concluded last weekend without a definitive agreement. Both Turkey and Egypt have unequivocally backed Pakistan’s commendable initiative, emphasizing the urgent need to prolong these negotiations and avert any return to hostilities in a volatile region.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, speaking at the conclusion of a three-day diplomacy forum in Antalya, underscored the collective desire for peace. “No one wants to see a new war break out when the ceasefire expires next week. We hope… the parties will extend the ceasefire,” Fidan stated, adding, “I hope there’ll be an extension. I am optimistic.”

Minister Fidan confirmed discussions with Pakistani officials on Sunday, highlighting the broad international consensus for continued dialogue. “The continuation of negotiations is something the entire international community wants. There is significant pressure in this regard,” he emphasized. He further asserted, “Under this level of pressure, I believe the parties should not see any obstacle to extending the ceasefire in order to continue peace negotiations.”

Fidan expressed confidence that unless confrontational measures are deliberately pursued, there remains “a strong possibility that the ceasefire will be extended and negotiations will continue.” He added, “Hopefully, a more positive scenario will emerge. With some luck, by that time, the key issues in the negotiations may already have been resolved.”

While acknowledging Iran’s realistic assessment that a final peace deal remains “far” off, Fidan praised the commitment of both sides. “It is clear that the negotiations have reached a critical stage. Both sides are continuing the talks with a genuine sense of sincerity. They also have the will to keep the process going,” he affirmed, recognizing the earnest efforts from all parties.

Israel’s Provocations Amidst Peace Efforts

In a stark contrast to the ongoing peace endeavors, Turkey’s top diplomat also vehemently criticized the Zionist regime, accusing Israel of attempting to create a “fait accompli” in Lebanon. Fidan denounced what he termed “Israeli expansionism,” highlighting these aggressive actions despite an agreed ceasefire.

Fidan pointed out the opportunistic nature of these Israeli provocations: “The ongoing Iran–United States negotiations seem to be overshadowing this situation (in Lebanon). Israel appears to be trying to take advantage of this distraction to create a fait accompli.” He reiterated his earlier statement from Saturday, where he condemned Israel’s attempts to occupy new territories under the false pretext of security concerns.

Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Fidan characterized the Israeli entity as a “fundamentalist government” and a source of “a security problem that troubles the world,” clearly delineating the threats posed by its policies to global peace and stability.
