Japan Welcomes Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire, Hopes for Middle East Peace
TOKYO – The Japanese government on Friday welcomed the agreement between Israel and Lebanon for a 10-day ceasefire, reached through talks mediated by the United States, describing it as an important step toward peace in the Middle East.
The ceasefire, initially announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on social media, commenced at midnight Thursday in Beirut. This development occurs amidst stalled U.S.-Iranian discussions aimed at ending hostilities, as Tehran’s principled conditions for a recent agreement notably included a crucial cessation of hostilities in Lebanon.
“Japan welcomes the agreement as an important step toward peace in the Middle East,” stated Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki, a senior government spokesman, during a regular press conference in Tokyo.
Despite uncertainties surrounding the agreement, particularly regarding whether the Iran-backed Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah will adhere to it, Ozaki expressed Japan’s “strong hope that it will be maintained and lead to further peace and stability in the region.”
