Iran Asserts Sovereignty: New Maritime Regime and Tolls for Hormuz Strait

In a decisive move to bolster maritime security and affirm its sovereign rights, Iran has announced a new comprehensive maritime regime for the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Ebrahim Azizi, a prominent member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Commission, declared on Friday that all vessels navigating through this crucial waterway must now adhere to updated regulations, which include mandatory authorization and the payment of designated tolls.

Speaking on X, Azizi underscored Iran’s unwavering resolve, stating, “The time has come to comply with the new Maritime Regime of the Strait of Hormuz.” He emphatically clarified that these rules are “determined by Iran, not by social media posts!” Under this meticulously structured new system, only commercial vessels that have secured explicit authorization from the esteemed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy will be permitted to traverse through designated routes, following the payment of the requisite tolls. This measure is designed to ensure orderly passage and enhance safety within Iranian territorial waters.

Azizi also issued a stern warning regarding potential provocations. “If the U.S. attempts to create any disturbance for Iranian ships, this situation can easily be changed,” he asserted, signaling Iran’s readiness to defend its interests and maintain stability in its maritime domain. This announcement follows earlier statements from Iran emphasizing that the reopening of this key waterway would serve as a critical litmus test for the United States’ “firm commitments” in the region.

While U.S. President Donald Trump previously claimed the strait would not be closed again, asserting that Iran had agreed to “everything,” Iran’s latest declaration firmly re-establishes its authority and operational control over the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring compliance with its national and international maritime responsibilities.
