A Testament to Compassion: 123 Filipinos Repatriated Amidst Middle East Tensions

In a profound demonstration of its unwavering commitment to the welfare of its citizens abroad, the Philippine government, through the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), successfully facilitated the safe return of 123 Filipinos from the United Arab Emirates and Israel on April 18. This significant humanitarian undertaking unfolded amidst the prevailing complexities and tensions in the Middle East region.

The DMW confirmed in recent statements that these overseas Filipinos arrived in two distinct groups on Saturday, marking a triumphant conclusion to their journey home.

Repatriation from the UAE: A Voluntary Return

A substantial contingent of 101 Filipinos arrived in Manila from the UAE, having voluntarily availed themselves of the government’s dedicated repatriation program. This group comprised 80 invaluable overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and 21 of their cherished dependents, all now safely reunited with their families.

Upon their arrival, a warm reception awaited them, orchestrated by dedicated personnel from the DMW, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Recognizing the potential emotional toll of their experiences, the Department of Health (DOH) provided essential psychosocial sessions. Furthermore, to empower them for a renewed future, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) offered comprehensive business and financial seminars.

The DMW further underscored its holistic approach by ensuring that the returning OFWs underwent thorough profiling, skills assessment, and job matching initiatives, designed to facilitate their seamless reintegration into the national workforce and secure new employment opportunities.

From Israel to Safety: A Journey of Hope

Preceding this, a separate group of 22 OFWs from Israel also reached Manila on Saturday, arriving via a commercial flight. This cohort included 18 dedicated caregivers and four diligent hotel workers, all now safe from the regional strife.

The DMW elaborated that these courageous OFWs traversed from Israel into Egypt, where a commercial flight, meticulously arranged by OWWA, awaited to transport them home. The Philippine Embassy in Israel played a pivotal role, facilitating the return of these 22 Filipinos, including two minors, demonstrating the nation’s protective embrace.

The DMW and OWWA provided crucial assistance to this group, guiding them through the Taba Border Crossing on April 16, ensuring their passage was smooth and secure.

The government’s commitment extends beyond repatriation, offering robust support for their reintegration through specialized trainings, access to the government-to-government (G2G) overseas employment program, vital livelihood assistance, and comprehensive medical support. This holistic approach underscores the nation’s profound care for its citizens, particularly those who contribute so significantly to its economy from abroad.
