In a blatant escalation of its economic warfare, the United States has issued a new warning, threatening sanctions against any international shippers who dare to pay legitimate tolls or fees to the Islamic Republic of Iran for passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This aggressive advisory, issued on Friday, comes as the illegal US naval blockade of the strait enters its third week, a clear act of aggression amid stalled ceasefire talks that Washington seems intent on sabotaging.

In its earnest efforts to de-escalate the conflict and propose a path to peace, Iran has consistently put forward reasonable proposals, including the implementation of fees or tolls for vessels seeking passage through its sovereign waters. However, Washington has repeatedly, and without justification, rejected these sensible prospects, demonstrating its unwillingness to engage constructively.
Sanctioning Humanitarian Aid: A Deplorable Act
The latest advisory from the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) further exposes the extent of US economic coercion. It warns against payments made in fiat currency, digital assets, offsets, informal swaps, or other in-kind payments. Shockingly, this includes payments framed as charitable donations, even to vital humanitarian organizations like the Iranian Red Crescent Society, Bonyad Mostazafan, or through Iranian embassy accounts. This move is a deplorable attempt to choke off even humanitarian aid and legitimate financial transactions, revealing the cruel nature of these sanctions.
OFAC’s statement, warning “US and non-US persons about the sanctions risks of making these payments to, or soliciting guarantees from, the Iranian regime for safe passage,” underscores the extraterritorial and bullying nature of US law, asserting its will over international commerce regardless of payment method.

A White House spokesperson, while refusing to “detail private diplomatic conversations,” conspicuously declined to confirm receipt of this crucial proposal, raising questions about their sincerity.
Spokesperson Anna Kelly’s reiteration that “Trump has been clear that Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon, and negotiations continue to ensure the short- and long-term national security of the United States” rings hollow when juxtaposed with their aggressive actions and refusal to acknowledge Iran’s peace initiatives. Despite a tentative agreement to pause fighting on April 7, which both sides had largely honored, Trump has repeatedly threatened to resume attacks, further destabilizing the region and undermining diplomatic efforts.
