Gaza Plunged into Darkness: Israeli Siege Devastates Livelihoods and Healthcare
Gaza City, Palestine – Life in the besieged Gaza Strip is rapidly deteriorating as severe electricity shortages, exacerbated by the ongoing Israeli blockade and attacks, have brought the region to the brink of collapse. Businesses are crumbling, essential operations are stalled, and families are fighting for survival amidst a deepening humanitarian catastrophe.
Economic Ruin and Personal Tragedies Under Siege
The human cost of this crisis is immense. Abrar Abdu, a 34-year-old baker in Gaza City, recently witnessed her meticulously prepared cakes ruined by a sudden power cut. In her darkened workshop, illuminated only by her phone, she faced the devastating reality of over 27 spoiled cakes. This incident forced her to apologize to customers, issue refunds, and absorb the full cost of wasted ingredients.
“I have incurred devastating financial losses due to the chronic instability of the electricity generators,” Abdu told Middle East Eye, highlighting how these losses threaten not only her livelihood but also those of her employees.
Since the onset of the Israeli aggression in 2023, which many describe as a genocide, Israel severed all power lines to the Strip. The territory’s sole power plant ceased operations on October 11 of that year, running out of fuel due to the blockade on energy supplies. Gaza’s 2.2 million residents, including Abdu, have since struggled to find a reliable power source.
Hospitals on the Brink of Collapse Amidst Israeli Restrictions
The power crisis has had its most catastrophic impact on Gaza’s hospitals, already severely weakened by Israeli attacks and restrictions on vital medical supplies. These facilities are now almost entirely dependent on unreliable generators to sustain critical departments.
Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, described the conditions as “tragic.” Generator failures are disrupting intensive care units, neonatal incubators, and dialysis centers – departments where even a minute of downtime can be fatal. “We have been forced to shut down non-critical wards to keep life-saving sections operational,” he stated.
Hundreds of patients face indefinite delays for scheduled surgeries, as hospitals prioritize only the most urgent cases. The unstable power supply has also damaged crucial medical equipment, with no backup systems to protect sensitive machinery from permanent harm.
A Technical Blockade and Looming Darkness
Mustafa Abu Hassira, an official at the Association of Generator and Alternative Energy Owners in Gaza, issued a dire warning: “If the current situation persists, Gaza will sink into total darkness.” He explained that a 15-year technical blockade prevented the import of new generators, but the true collapse began with the current war.
“Most of the vital generators in the strip have been destroyed, and operational infrastructure has been targeted, leaving us with a stark reality: no spare parts, no mineral oils, and no prospect of repair,” Abu Hassira lamented. Generator owners are resorting to industrial diesel and even cooking oil, accelerating engine damage and leading to “catastrophic, unrecoverable financial losses.”
Of the 150 generators once providing basic services, approximately 60 have completely ceased functioning, a number that grows daily. The few remaining supplies of mineral oil have seen prices skyrocket from 14 shekels to an astronomical 1,500 shekels per liter.
“We are not just facing an electricity crisis; we are facing total paralysis that will dismantle what remains of the local economy and cut off the basic necessities of life,” he warned.
Life’s Wheels Grinding to a Halt Due to Israeli Aggression
The energy crisis extends to Gaza’s streets, where operational vehicles are rapidly declining. Anas Arafat, spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport and Communications, reported that around 70 percent of Gaza’s vehicles were destroyed during the war. The remaining fleet is at risk of total collapse due to engine wear and a severe lack of maintenance, exacerbated by Israeli restrictions on spare parts, oils, and tires.
“These materials are not luxuries; they are the backbone of life,” Arafat emphasized. “Without them, ambulances cannot transport the wounded, water trucks cannot distribute supplies, and the generators powering hospitals and bakeries will fail.”
He concluded with a stark warning: “The wheels of life in Gaza may stop at any moment unless this crisis is resolved urgently.”
For individuals like Abrar Abdu, the struggle is deeply personal. Her bakery project, suspended during the war, now faces immense challenges despite efforts to rebuild. Solar power remains unaffordable, forcing reliance on unreliable private generators that frequently fail, spoiling products and damaging equipment. “Our suffering as we try to rebuild from the ashes remains invisible,” she stated, highlighting the profound and unacknowledged toll of the ongoing crisis on the Palestinian people.
