The internet blackout in Iran, which began on February 28, has reached its 57th day, setting a global record. This restriction, imposed in the name of war and internal security, is claimed to have devastated the country’s economy. Furthermore, citizens have been deprived of their fundamental right to information.

Iran is currently undergoing an unimaginable digital crisis. According to a report by the internet monitoring organization NetBlocks, the internet has been completely shut down in Iran for the past 57 days. This is the longest nationwide internet ban ever imposed in any country. Starting eight weeks ago, this restriction has not only isolated Iran’s more than 90 million citizens from the world but has also dealt a massive blow to the nation’s economy.

Internet services were abruptly shut down on February 28 following US-Israel attacks. Amidst regional instability and the threat of war, the Iranian administration resorted to this measure to completely control the flow of information. According to NetBlocks data, this disruption has now surpassed a duration of 1,344 hours. Previously, in January 2026, the government had imposed a similar ban during protests to prevent news of internal unrest from leaking out.

This prolonged internet outage has disrupted normal life in Iran. Banking services, online businesses, and transportation networks have come to a complete standstill. Experts estimate that the lack of access to internet services has caused a total loss of $2.5 billion to Iran’s economy so far. Due to the ban, approximately 370 billion Iranian Rials in revenue are being affected every day.

People are facing difficulties in contacting their family members. Access to foreign media and independent information sources is completely blocked, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty within the country.

Iranian authorities have begun using military-grade jammers to block satellite internet services like Starlink, while also closing off alternative communication routes.

While Iran is digitally isolated from the world, its diplomatic standoff with the US and Israel is deepening. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently visited Pakistan, where he is discussing regional security. Currently, no timeline has been set for the restoration of the internet in Iran, raising the possibility that this ‘digital darkness’ will continue even longer.

#IranInternetBlackout #DigitalRights #NetBlocks #InternetShutdown #IranEconomy #InformationControl #Starlink #HumanRights #GlobalRecord #MiddleEastCrisis

Kathmandu.
