In a deeply contested exercise, Palestinians in the occupied West Bank<\/strong> and the besieged central area of Gaza<\/strong> are casting ballots today for local elections. This vote marks the first such democratic attempt since the brutal Israeli war on Gaza, which commenced in October 2023, leaving a trail of devastation and countless martyrs.<\/p>\n

While over 1 million people are deemed eligible to vote, including more than 70,000 in Gaza\u2019s Deir el-Balah area, the legitimacy of these elections under the shadow of a relentless occupation remains a significant question. The backdrop to these elections is one of escalating Israeli aggression and settler violence. Just this Tuesday, two Palestinians, including a 14-year-old boy, were brutally murdered after Israeli settlers, emboldened by the occupation, opened fire near a school in the village of al-Mughayyir. Such heinous acts of terror are a daily reality for Palestinians in the West Bank, highlighting the urgent need for international intervention and accountability for Israel’s crimes.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s vote, the first Palestinian election since the latest Israeli war on Gaza began, takes place amidst an ongoing genocide and a desperate struggle for justice and freedom.
