March witnessed a remarkable doubling of Chinese solar exports, setting a new record, as nations across Asia, Africa, and beyond urgently sought to diversify their energy sources.

This surge is particularly notable against the backdrop of the energy crisis exacerbated by the US-Israeli war on Iran, which has underscored the volatility of traditional fossil fuel markets. According to energy think tank Ember, exports in March hit an astounding 68 gigawatts (GW), a figure equivalent to Spain’s entire solar capacity, and a substantial 49 percent increase over the previous record set in August 2025.

Global Demand Reaches Historic Highs

The data reveals a broad-based increase in demand, with at least 50 nations recording all-time highs for Chinese solar imports in March. An additional 60 countries experienced their highest import levels in six months, signaling a robust global pivot towards renewable energy solutions.

Regions most acutely impacted by the ongoing energy crisis demonstrated the sharpest increases. Exports to Africa soared by 176 percent compared to February, reaching 10GW, while exports to Asia doubled to approximately 39GW. Both figures represent all-time records, with these two regions collectively accounting for three-quarters of the overall export growth.

Individual country statistics further highlight this trend: India’s imports surged by 141 percent, Nigeria’s by an astonishing 519 percent, Kenya’s by 207 percent, and Ethiopia’s by 391 percent. For the first time ever, each of these nations imported over one GW of solar technology in a single month, demonstrating a decisive move towards energy independence.

While records were also established in Japan, Australia, and across the European Union, the Middle East presented a unique scenario. The region did not experience a similar uptick in solar imports, primarily due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which significantly disrupted trade flows – a stark reminder of the fragile geopolitical situation.

Solar: The Engine of a New Global Economy

Euan Graham, a senior analyst at Ember, emphasized the profound impact of current events: “Fossil shocks are boosting the solar surge. Solar has already become the engine of the global economy, and now the current fossil fuel price shocks are taking it up a gear. Countries are importing solar panels at record levels, and building up their own domestic assembly and manufacturing capabilities to address surging global demand.” This statement underscores the strategic importance of solar energy in navigating geopolitical uncertainties.

Beyond geopolitical factors, a change in Chinese export tax rebate rules, effective April, also contributed to the rush, adding approximately 9 percent to solar panel costs and prompting a flurry of purchases before the deadline.

The demand extends beyond finished panels. Exports of solar cells and wafers, increasingly assembled into panels outside China, rose by 108 percent from February levels to reach 36GW, surpassing panel exports for the first time since October 2025. Panel exports also saw a significant increase of 91 percent, reaching 32GW.

Furthermore, battery exports surged as nations sought to store solar electricity for continuous use. China’s battery exports increased by 44 percent from February, reaching $10 billion in March, with particularly strong demand observed in the EU, Australia, and India.

The scale of this clean energy build-out is now beginning to rival the fossil fuel disruptions it aims to address. Ember’s Global Electricity Review 2026 highlighted that record growth in solar generation in 2025 was sufficient to displace gas-fired electricity equivalent to all liquefied natural gas exports through the Strait of Hormuz last year. Similarly, the global electric vehicle fleet displaced 1.8 million barrels per day of oil demand in 2025, equivalent to 13 percent of US crude oil production, marking a clear trajectory towards a more sustainable and independent energy future.

#SolarEnergy #CleanEnergy #EnergyTransition #Geopolitics #ChinaExports #RenewableEnergy #EnergyCrisis #MiddleEast #SustainableFuture #GlobalShift

In a significant development reflecting the shifting global energy landscape, China’s solar exports have reached unprecedented levels, driven by an escalating energy crisis and a worldwide push for sustainable alternatives.
