Here’s how the Middle East crisis is impacting job market and your household bills – for now

The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has sent ripples across global economies and sectors. Despite this, India’s economy appears resilient, showing only a few early signs of pressure, according to a recent report from HDFC Bank’s treasury research team.

The report, titled ‘Macro Billboard: 40 Charts, Early Signals’ and dated April 20, 2026, indicates that household spending has not been significantly affected by rising energy prices yet. However, initial signs of caution are emerging, with consumer surveys revealing a decline in confidence.

The employment landscape presents a mixed picture. While the formal job market is improving, rural unemployment is gradually increasing. The report warns that a potential migration of more people back to villages could depress rural wages and lead to labor shortages in industrial areas.

Manufacturing is beginning to feel the pinch of higher energy costs, despite its earlier strong performance. The services sector, however, largely remains unaffected for the time being. Some impact is observed in sea-port cargo and air passenger traffic, but other indicators such as air cargo, bank activity, commercial vehicle sales, and GST collections continue to show steady growth.

The report anticipates the overall economic impact of the conflict to remain limited in the last quarter of FY26. It states, “We expect the economic impact of the war to be limited in Q4 FY26 (with the impact likely to be felt only in March and with momentum being strong in January and February) and do not see a material downside to the growth estimate of 7.3-7.4% for Q4 FY26.”

Looking ahead, the report highlights risks primarily stemming from supply issues. “While ‘peak uncertainty’ seems to have moderated around the war for now, the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to present downside risks due to supply disruptions to the growth outlook for Q1 FY27 and beyond.”

Recent data confirms robust demand, which, despite a post-festive season slowdown, remains stronger than levels observed in 2024 and early 2025 in both rural and urban areas. GST rate cuts have bolstered this recovery into 2026, with March GST collections surpassing Rs 2 lakh crore, an increase of 8.8%. Vehicle sales, encompassing two-wheelers and passenger cars, have grown by over 20%.

Rural demand also appears strong, supported by increased rabi sowing, robust tractor sales growth, and reduced demand for MNREGA work. Inflation remains under control at 3.4%, helping to mitigate the effect of higher energy prices on spending.

Overall, while some early signs of stress are appearing, the economy remains stable for now, with risks predominantly arising from potential supply disruptions in the near future.

#MiddleEastCrisis #IndiaEconomy #JobMarket #HouseholdBills #EconomicImpact #SupplyChain #Inflation #HDFCBankReport #FY26Outlook #GlobalEconomy

The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has sent ripples across global economies and sectors.
