Senator Marco Rubio suggests a deal with Iran could materialize today, tomorrow, or next week, as reported by ABC News’ Olivia Rubin on Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s testimony before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.

According to U.S. officials and other sources familiar with the matter, President Donald Trump is demanding that Tehran put specific nuclear concessions down in writing as part of a preliminary agreement. This move aims to resolve the prolonged deadlock between the U.S. and Iran. Iranian negotiators had previously offered verbal assurances that the Islamic Republic would ultimately agree to certain terms related to Iran’s nuclear program. However, sources indicate that President Trump, during a meeting in the Situation Room on Friday, determined these verbal commitments were not strong enough.

During his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio elaborated on what the Trump administration sought from Iran before progressing. Rubio stated, “They have to commit to very specific negotiations on highly enriched — the disposition of the highly enriched uranium that still is buried deep in a mountain somewhere.” He added, “They have to agree on negotiating severe and long-term limitations and/or cancellation of enrichment activity in their country.” Rubio also mentioned that the specifics, including potential financial incentives for Tehran, could be determined at a later stage.

“For example, they have to commit to say ‘we will dispose of the enriched uranium. And the question now is ‘What are the mechanisms by which we do so?’ That can be negotiated,” he explained.

For several weeks, discussions between the U.S. and Iran have focused on reaching a preliminary memorandum of understanding. Such an agreement would formally extend the fragile ceasefire between the countries, gradually reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and establish a timeline for further negotiations on nuclear issues. Last week, American and Iranian negotiating teams reportedly finalized a draft of this deal, believing it could secure the support of both President Trump and the Iranian leadership. This version included a written commitment from Iran not to pursue a nuclear weapon – a pledge consistently made public by Iran’s leaders in recent years – but did not include specific promises related to its broader nuclear program, which the Islamic Republic has always insisted is intended for peaceful purposes.

Iran is currently reviewing the updated terms, and officials state that its negotiators have not yet indicated whether the leadership is likely to accept them. U.S. officials note that Trump is cautious about making any significant monetary concessions to Iran during this phase of negotiations. Rubio testified that the administration had not offered to lift sanctions targeting Iran or unfreeze any of its assets as part of the initial deal, asserting that such measures would only be considered once Iran fulfilled its promises to curb its nuclear program.

President Trump told ABC News’ Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl on Monday that he expects Iran to agree to his terms within the week. However, U.S. officials have continued to express doubt about internal dynamics within the Iranian leadership and its ability to coalesce behind an agreement. A state-sponsored Iranian news agency reported on Tuesday that the latest draft of the potential deal was still under review in Tehran.

Rubio commented on Tuesday, “You ultimately are negotiating with people who then have to negotiate within their own system to see what they’re allowed to give and what they’re allowed to agree to.” He also stated that although Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen or heard from publicly since he was injured in the strike that killed his father during the opening hours of the war, there were now “indications” that he is “increasingly engaging at some level” in negotiations.

#IranNuclearDeal #USIranTalks #NuclearCommitments #Tehran #DonaldTrump #MarcoRubio #StraitOfHormuz #PeacefulNuclearProgram #Diplomacy #MiddleEast

Iran has not signaled whether it will accept the terms, officials say.
