The S&P 500 Index was up +0.21%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose +0.65%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index gained +0.25%.

The market’s upward momentum was primarily driven by two key factors: optimism surrounding a potential peace deal in the Middle East and robust spending on AI infrastructure. Hopes for a Middle East peace agreement are easing pressure on crude oil prices and subsequently reducing inflation concerns. Simultaneously, relentless demand for AI-infrastructure upgrades continues to propel technology stocks higher, exemplified by Dell Technologies’ more than +30% jump after delivering a sales outlook that significantly surpassed analysts’ estimates.

Investors are closely watching for President Trump’s approval of a preliminary deal between the U.S. and Iran, which aims to extend a ceasefire by 60 days and reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. While Vice President Vance noted ongoing discussions on ‘language points,’ including Iran’s nuclear capabilities, the prospect alone has fueled market optimism.

Positive U.S. economic news also contributed to the market’s strength, with the May MNI Chicago PMI rising sharply by +13.5 to 62.7, exceeding expectations and marking the strongest expansion in over four years.

Federal Reserve comments offered a mixed picture. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly expressed cautious optimism about the U.S. economy, stating that current interest rate policy is ‘in a good place’ with ‘no urgency to make an adjustment.’ Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari echoed this sentiment, deeming it ‘premature’ to consider immediate rate hikes. However, Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid warned against complacency, emphasizing the need to maintain vigilance on price stability with inflation still above the Fed’s 2% target.

Crude oil prices fell more than -1% to a 5-week low on optimism surrounding the potential U.S.-Iran ceasefire extension, which could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Despite the positive sentiment, significant hurdles remain before crude flows can fully resume, including mine removal in the waterway, restarting shut-in oil fields, and repairing damaged energy infrastructure.

The market is currently discounting a mere 3% chance of a -25 basis point FOMC rate cut at the upcoming June 16-17 meeting.

The generally favorable Q1 earnings season is nearing its end, with 84% of the 485 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% year-over-year, though this figure drops to around +3% when excluding the technology sector.

Overseas stock markets presented a mixed performance: the Euro Stoxx 50 was up +0.17%, China’s Shanghai Composite closed down -0.73%, while Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average rallied to a new record high, closing up +2.53%.

In the bond market, June 10-year T-notes saw modest gains, with the 10-year T-note yield down -0.6 basis points to 4.441%. This was supported by declining WTI crude oil prices, which eased inflation expectations, and bond dealer short covering. However, gains were limited by the strong Chicago PMI data and the S&P 500’s record rally, which reduced safe-haven demand for T-notes.

European government bond yields moved lower, with the 10-year German Bund yield down -1.9 basis points to 2.942% and the 10-year UK gilt yield down -1.0 basis points to 4.804%. German economic data showed a weaker-than-expected May CPI but a stronger labor market with an unexpected fall in unemployment. ECB Governing Council members Fabio Panetta and Gediminas Simkus signaled strong support for an ECB rate hike in June, with a 92% chance priced in by swaps.

Among individual U.S. stocks, software companies rallied significantly, with ServiceNow (+13%), Palantir Technologies (+9%), IBM (+9%), and Atlassian Corp (+9%) leading gains. Cybersecurity stocks also surged, with Okta up over +24% after strong Q1 results and an increased outlook. Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks like Micron Technology (+4%) and Dell Technologies (+31%) also saw substantial gains. Conversely, The Gap (-17%), American Eagle Outfitters (-12%), and SentinelOne (-11%) faced declines following disappointing earnings or forecasts. Costco Wholesale (-4%) also fell despite better-than-expected earnings, due to concerns over moderating membership growth.

#StockMarket #AITechnology #MiddleEastPeace #EconomicGrowth #FederalReserve #CrudeOilPrices #EarningsSeason #TechStocks #GlobalMarkets #MarketUpdate

U.S. stock indexes surged today, with the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq 100 all climbing to new all-time highs.
