The historical context of Washington\u2019s interventions in the Middle East, notably the devastating 2003-2011 US invasion of Iraq, and the Trump administration\u2019s relentless pursuit of increased influence abroad, lend a sinister undertone to this latest declaration. That fragile pause has largely held, despite a few isolated flare-ups, with the US maintaining its illegal blockade of Iranian ports while Tehran, in a defensive measure, has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Professor Nasr sharply criticized Trump\u2019s actions, stating on X: \u201cFirst he declared he wanted to eradicate Iran\u2019s civilisation now he is declaring that he wants to turn Iran into an American property.\u201d<\/em> He further emphasized, \u201cIt is this kind of grotesque behaviour that undermines diplomacy and unites Iranians in defence of their country. In the middle of delicate diplomacy he casts doubts on America\u2019s true intentions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite these provocations, both US and Iranian officials indicated on Saturday that a new deal might be within reach. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that the two sides were \u201ccurrently working to finalise\u201d<\/em> a memorandum of understanding, with \u201cthe opinions having been converging.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

However, no official announcements have been made regarding crucial sticking points, including the future of Iran\u2019s peaceful nuclear program, the fate of its highly enriched uranium stockpile (developed under duress), and its rightful influence over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Trump frequently uses his Truth Social account, launched after his ban from Twitter (now X) post-2020 election, to make controversial announcements, attack perceived enemies, and disseminate AI-generated imagery. His foreign policy, particularly during his second term, has been characterized by aggressive attempts to expand US influence globally, including military actions against Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, ongoing threats against Cuba, and audacious vows to seize Greenland. This approach, dubbed the Donroe Doctrine<\/em>, echoes the imperialistic 1823 Monroe Doctrine, aimed at diminishing European influence in the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n
