Chennai: In response to the escalating fuel prices triggered by the ongoing Middle East crisis, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan has called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene a national summit of all chief ministers.<\/p>\n
Haasan appealed to both the central and state governments to collaboratively shoulder the burden and alleviate the financial strain on ordinary citizens. He proposed measures such as reducing the Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel and lowering fares for public transport, including trains, Metros, and buses, to encourage a shift from private to public commuting. “Both the central and state governments should work together to protect the common man and implement these two measures immediately,” he stated.<\/p>\n
Emphasizing the critical importance of safeguarding Indian households from inflationary pressures, Haasan added, “Remember, every unit of energy saved today strengthens India tomorrow and every drop of oil saved protects the poorest Indian from inflation. If we face this crisis together, India can and will emerge stronger.” He underscored that national duty must transcend party politics, especially as the Prime Minister has urged citizens to practice energy conservation in the coming year.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Haasan recently addressed the Indian film industry, urging attention to the “growing disconnect between spending and purpose.” He advocated for optimizing production and shooting budgets amidst the conflict in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. He championed filming within India, asserting, “Why must every love story bloom only in Paris, and every honeymoon end in Switzerland? Romance, fortunately, does not require foreign exchange. Indian cinema, and Indians, deserve a little more confidence in themselves and our beautiful country.”<\/p>\n
He concluded by calling for “practical and sustainable operating practices for efficient filmmaking: better shooting discipline, tighter schedules, reduced luxury and entourage expenses, limiting avoidable foreign travel where suitable local alternatives exist, conserving energy across sets and studios, and encouraging sustainable set construction and reuse of materials.”<\/p>\n
