TEHRAN \u2013 In response to comments made by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei asserted that the recent US-Israeli offensive constituted a blatant act of aggression and could not be simply dismissed as an “unnecessary war.”<\/p>\n
On Friday, Baqaei took to his X account to address Steinmeier’s recent remarks, which criticized the United States for its 2018 withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and its subsequent use of force against Iran, while labeling the conflict an “unnecessary war.”<\/p>\n
Baqaei emphasized that the American-Israeli aggression against Iran represents a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter. He urged all nations committed to international law to condemn this attack and demand accountability.<\/p>\n
“Mr. President, it is indeed true that the current crisis plaguing our region and the world directly originates from the United States\u2019 unlawful and arbitrary withdrawal from the JCPOA in May 2018,” Baqaei stated. “It is also true that this imposed conflict could and should have been averted. However, the UN Charter does not acknowledge any concept of a \u2018necessary war\u2019 that would grant states the right to employ force against another sovereign nation based on the arbitrary and whimsical decisions of aggressors.”<\/p>\n
The Iranian spokesperson further elaborated, “The American-Israeli attack on Iran cannot be downplayed or recharacterized as merely an \u2018unnecessary war.\u2019 It was a flagrant violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter \u2013 a blatant act of aggression against a sovereign state. Any nation that upholds the rule of law and the UN Charter must unequivocally condemn this act of aggression and demand accountability.”<\/p>\n
