Returning from Beijing on Friday following two days of discussions with Xi, Trump mentioned he was contemplating lifting U.S. sanctions on Chinese oil companies purchasing Iranian oil. China remains the largest importer of Iranian oil.

“I’m not asking for any favors because when you ask for favors, you have to do favors in return,” Trump remarked to a reporter on Air Force One, who inquired if Xi had made a firm commitment to pressure Iran into reopening the crucial strait. Xi refrained from commenting on his talks with Trump regarding Iran. However, China’s foreign ministry voiced its frustration with the conflict involving Iran, describing it as a war “which should never have happened, has no reason to continue.”

Iran had effectively closed the strait, a vital artery for one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply, prior to the U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28th. This disruption to shipping has triggered the most significant oil supply crisis in history, leading to a dramatic surge in oil prices. Thousands of Iranians perished during the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes, and thousands more have been killed in Lebanon amidst renewed clashes between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.

“We want the straits open,” Trump said. The U.S. halted its attacks last month but initiated a port blockade. Tehran declared it would not unblock the strait until the U.S. lifted its blockade. Trump has warned of resuming attacks if Iran fails to agree to a deal. “We don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon; we want the straits open,” Trump stated in Beijing, alongside Xi.

Iran, which has consistently denied intentions to develop nuclear weapons, has refused to cease nuclear research or surrender its undeclared stockpile of enriched uranium, much to Trump’s dismay. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reported that Tehran had received communications from the U.S. suggesting Washington’s readiness to continue negotiations. “We hope that, with the advancement of negotiations, we will reach a good conclusion so that the Strait of Hormuz can be completely secured and we can expedite the normalization of traffic through the strait,” he informed reporters in New Delhi.

Trump, who had told Fox News’ “Hannity” program in an interview aired Thursday that he was losing patience with Iran, asserted that Tehran “should make a deal.” Oil prices climbed approximately 3 percent to around $109 a barrel on Friday, driven by concerns over the lack of progress in resolving the conflict, while U.S. Treasury yields reached their highest in about a year amid expectations that the Federal Reserve might need to increase interest rates.

Discussions aimed at ending the war, which has become a political liability for Trump ahead of the U.S. congressional elections in November, have been stalled since last week, as both Iran and the U.S. rejected each other’s latest proposals. Iran would welcome China’s involvement, Araqchi stated on Friday, adding that Tehran was attempting to pursue diplomacy but harbored distrust towards the U.S., which had previously disrupted talks by initiating airstrikes.

#StraitOfHormuz #IranCrisis #USChinaRelations #OilPrices #MiddleEastConflict #TrumpXiTalks #IranNuclearDeal #Geopolitics #EnergySecurity #Diplomacy

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping concurred on the necessity for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, despite China offering no sign of its direct intervention.
