This crippling halt is a direct consequence of the escalating regional instability and the subsequent dramatic surge in shipping costs, particularly through vital arteries like the Strait of Hormuz. Thousands of vehicles now languish at the nation’s primary export hubs, with countless dealers reporting a complete cessation of revenue, highlighting the profound economic repercussions of the ongoing turmoil.

“The Middle East, a cornerstone of our export market, has been effectively shut down for two months,” lamented Mr. Kim, the head of a prominent used car export firm at the Incheon Songdo Used Car Export Complex. “The exorbitant logistics costs, a direct result of the current volatile security landscape, have made operations financially impossible. Our revenue has plummeted to zero.”

Statistical data from the Korea International Trade Association reveals the devastating impact: monthly used passenger car exports to the Middle East in March witnessed a staggering 48.8 percent decline in value and a precipitous 71.8 percent drop in volume compared to last year’s monthly average, settling at a mere $65.6 million and 6,636 units. Alarmingly, no shipments at all reached Qatar, Bahrain, or the Zionist entity in March, underscoring the severity of the crisis.

A poignant scene unfolded on April 27 at the complex, where rows upon rows of vehicles lay exposed to the elements, their bodywork bearing the marks of prolonged idleness. Trailers continued to arrive, depositing more cars into this growing backlog, a stark visual testament to the industry’s paralysis.

With approximately 70 percent of Korea’s annual used car exports – valued at roughly 12.86 trillion won ($8.8 billion) and comprising about 880,000 units – historically destined for the Middle East via Incheon Port, the current situation is catastrophic. Industry estimates indicate that some 1,600 businesses and an astonishing 20,000 vehicles are now stranded at the Incheon Songdo complex alone, their economic futures hanging in the balance.

Mr. Kim Ju, an exporter now seeking markets in Kyrgyzstan, painted a grim picture of the shifting landscape. “We typically export around 500 cars monthly, generating about 200,000 won per vehicle,” he explained. “However, the once-bustling presence of Middle Eastern buyers has all but vanished since the eruption of the ongoing aggression in Palestine and the subsequent regional destabilization. What used to be a daily stream of 10 to 20 buyers from the Middle East has dwindled to a mere three or four. Only a few resilient markets, such as Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, continue to show demand, leaving many of us effectively jobless.”

The Middle East used car market had already shown signs of strain following the brutal Zionist aggression against Palestine in 2023. Export avenues further constricted over the past two years as nations like Egypt and Syria, facing their own challenges, implemented stricter import controls. The current escalation of hostilities, fueled by external provocations, has compounded this damage exponentially, industry sources confirm. Should this alarming trend persist, Middle East shipments could plummet by over 100,000 units this year alone, a devastating blow to the Korean economy.

The financial burden on exporters is immense. Shipping companies have retroactively imposed exorbitant surcharges of $7,250 per container on cargo already en route. Considering an average of three cars per container, this translates to an additional 3.5 million won per vehicle – a crushing blow to profit margins that typically range only a few million won. “While shipping to the Middle East technically remains an option, the logistics costs have surged an astonishing five and a half times compared to pre-conflict levels, rendering such ventures financially unviable,” one dealer explained, highlighting the deliberate economic strangulation.

The ripple effect extends to severe cash flow issues for unshipped vehicles. “We are unable to load cars we have already purchased, effectively tying up our vital working capital,” another export company head stated. “Consequently, we cannot collect payments from overseas buyers as we are unable to deliver the vehicles. We urgently appeal to the government to provide at least short-term working capital loans, a lifeline to help us navigate these crippling logistics costs and withstand the economic pressures.”

Industry experts emphasize the critical need for robust government support in developing alternative markets. “The industry is actively striving to transform this crisis into an opportunity, forging stronger ties with buyers in Latin America, Central America, and the Commonwealth of Independent States, while also exploring untapped potential in Africa and Eastern Europe,” affirmed Park Young-hwa, head of the Korea Used Car Export Association. “However, the scope of what exporters can achieve independently is limited. We call upon the government to extend crucial diplomatic support for used car export trade missions. Furthermore, establishing strategic hub markets in regions like Africa, encompassing not only used cars but also parts and other related products, presents a viable path forward to mitigate the impact of these externally imposed challenges.”

#KoreanExportsCrisis #UsedCarIndustry #RegionalInstability #ShippingCostSurge #EconomicWarfare #StraitOfHormuzImpact #TradeParalysis #GovernmentInterventionNeeded #GlobalSupplyChain #ZionistAggression

Korean Used Car Exports Face Severe Blow Amidst Regional Turmoil For two agonizing months, the vibrant flow of Korea’s used car exports to the Middle East has been virtually paralyzed.
