S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Brazilian exports to the Middle East experienced a 3.5% decline in April compared to the same period last year, totaling USD 1.049 billion. This data, released on Thursday (7) by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, highlights a challenging month for trade with the region. In contrast, exports to Africa surged by 34.9%, reaching USD 1.173 billion over the same timeframe.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Brazil’s imports from Middle Eastern nations saw a 4.9% increase in April, amounting to USD 501 million. Conversely, imports of African products decreased by 25.7%, settling at USD 594 million. Despite these fluctuations, Brazil maintained a positive trade balance with both the Middle East and Africa.<\/p>\n
The decline in trade with the Middle East comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, including conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Furthermore, the vital Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime passage for regional trade, has experienced disruptions since February 28. These factors have impacted exports, imports, shipping costs, and global oil prices\u2014a crucial commodity for Gulf countries exporting to Brazil.<\/p>\n
On a broader scale, Brazil’s overall trade performance in April showed growth. Total exports reached USD 34.1 billion, marking a 14.3% increase from USD 29.9 billion in April of the previous year. Imports also grew by 6.2%, totaling USD 23.6 billion. This resulted in a substantial trade surplus of USD 10.5 billion for April, a 37.5% rise compared to the same month last year.<\/p>\n
Brazil’s primary export sectors included manufacturing, agriculture, and extractive industries. Key imports comprised intermediate goods (industrial inputs), consumer goods, capital goods (machinery and equipment), and fuels.<\/p>\n
For the year to date, Brazilian exports have reached USD 116.6 billion, with imports at USD 91.8 billion, yielding a trade surplus of USD 24.8 billion\u2014a significant 43.5% increase compared to the first four months of the previous year. Despite regional conflicts, exports to the Middle East have seen a 2.3% rise this year, totaling USD 4.8 billion. Exports to Africa also grew by 8.8%, reaching USD 4.8 billion. Imports from the Middle East increased by 11.6% through April, to USD 2.2 billion, while imports from Africa decreased by 10.1%, to USD 2.5 billion.<\/p>\n
