Anders Malmström, the Group CFO, revealed that the company has allocated approximately $400 million in additional reserves during the first quarter of 2026. This strategic provision is aimed at mitigating the potential inflationary repercussions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking to the media after the release of robust first-quarter results, Malmström elaborated on the allocation of these new reserves. He confirmed that the $400 million designated for the Middle East conflict’s indirect impacts is strategically divided: $350 million is earmarked for property and casualty reinsurance, with the remaining $50 million allocated to Corporate Solutions.

Malmström underscored that, despite the geopolitical tensions, Swiss Re has not encountered any direct claims related to the war itself. This is primarily attributed to standard war exclusions embedded within their policy frameworks. However, the focus remains on the broader, secondary economic consequences.

“There’s really the secondary risk that we see coming from the Middle East,” Malmström stated. “When you think about all the disruption, the supply chain, and then, in particular, the higher energy prices, that’s where we strongly believe that we’re going to see inflation picking up.”

During the call, the CFO further clarified that direct exposure within the Property & Casualty (P&C) sector remains highly limited. While specialty lines occasionally feature broader inclusions, Swiss Re has, to date, not experienced any material claims directly attributable to the conflict.

Malmström emphasized the nature of the anticipated impact: “Now, the impact of the war is really the second order impact, when you think about the significant increase in energy prices that will drive inflation. Also, the disruption in supply chain will drive inflation.”

He concluded by explaining the rationale behind the proactive measure: “And so, that’s why we thought it’s prudent to put money aside for higher inflation. This is for business that has already been written, not claims, they haven’t happened, but claims will come, can be property prices, can be construction, can be whatever. And that’s why we believe that higher inflation will have an impact.” This foresight aims to prepare for future claims influenced by an inflationary environment rather than direct war damages.

#SwissRe #Reinsurance #Inflation #MiddleEastConflict #FinancialReserves #EconomicImpact #SupplyChain #EnergyPrices #RiskManagement #CorporateFinance

Swiss Re Bolsters Reserves with $400 Million Amid Middle East Conflict’s Inflationary Pressures Zurich, Switzerland – Swiss Re, one of Europe’s prominent reinsurance giants, announced today a significant move to fortify its financial resilience.
