This pause is intended to facilitate the finalization of a deal with Iran to end the conflict. Despite this, Trump confirmed that the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports would persist, a decision he communicated via social media. The White House has yet to comment, and Iran has not responded to Trump’s statement.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that major U.S. military operations against Iran have concluded. He emphasized that Iran must comply with U.S. demands regarding its nuclear program and ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio characterized recent clashes in the strait, related to U.S. efforts to reopen the waterway, as “defensive in nature.”

Concurrently, Britain’s Maritime Trade Operations agency reported that a cargo vessel had been struck by a projectile in the strait, with further details pending. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had stated earlier on Tuesday that the U.S. successfully secured a passage through the waterway, with hundreds of commercial ships awaiting transit. He added that the four-week-old truce with Iran remained intact.

Meanwhile, members of the UN Security Council commenced closed-door discussions on a U.S.-drafted resolution, co-sponsored by Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar. If passed, this resolution could impose sanctions on Iran and potentially authorize the use of force should Tehran continue its attacks and threats to commercial shipping.

The fragility of the four-week truce was underscored by fresh exchanges of fire on Monday, intensifying the struggle between the U.S. and Iran for control of the narrow waterway and reinforcing rival maritime blockades. For the second consecutive day, the United Arab Emirates reported its air defenses had intercepted missiles and drones originating from Iran, a claim Tehran has not yet addressed.

Separately, clashes between Hezbollah and Israel continued, with Israel’s military reporting that Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon launched “several rockets” towards Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon late Tuesday. No injuries were reported.

Domestically, the U.S. national average retail price of gasoline exceeded $4.50 per gallon on Tuesday, marking the first time since July 2022, according to data from GasBuddy.

Secretary Rubio also addressed his upcoming trip to the Vatican, denying it was an attempt to “smooth things over” with Pope Leo following Donald Trump’s public criticism of the Pontiff, who has been an outspoken critic of the war against Iran. Rubio clarified that the trip was pre-planned and involved various topics of discussion with the Vatican.

Regarding pushback from U.S. lawmakers who view the naval blockade as an act of war, Rubio maintained that Iran is attempting to normalize its control over the Strait of Hormuz. He asserted that the U.S. cannot permit Iran to “normalize the fact that they get to blow up commercial ships and put mines in the water,” defending the blockade as a “defensive measure” and a “counter to what they have decided to do,” contrasting it with Iran’s “act of war” of placing mines.

On Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Rubio stated that while Iran consistently claims it does not seek nuclear weapons, “they just don’t mean it.” He urged Iran to seize the current opportunity to agree to terms that would unequivocally demonstrate its lack of interest in nuclear armament. Rubio called for Iran to make a “sensible choice” by pursuing a diplomatic path towards “reconstruction, prosperity and to stability and to not posing a threat to the world.” He warned that the alternative is “growing isolation, economic collapse, and ultimately total defeat,” advising Iran not to “test the will of the United States.”

Rubio reiterated the U.S. preference for the straits to be “opened to the way they’re supposed to be open, back to the way it was. Anyone can use it. No mines in the water, nobody paying tolls. That’s what we have to get back to, and that’s the goal here.”

Outlining the impact of the U.S.’s “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran’s economy, Rubio claimed Iran’s inflation stands at 70%, and its currency is in “total and complete freefall.” He estimated the U.S. blockade costs Iran “as much as $500m a day in lost revenue” and has halted “90% of total Iranian trade,” causing “permanent damage” to its oil infrastructure. Rubio attributed these economic pressures to Iran’s “piracy,” stating, “It cannot be that [Iran] has these straits and they blow up any ship that moves, and the only ships that get to go through were theirs.”

Finally, Rubio framed “Project Freedom” as a humanitarian rescue mission, aiming to “rescue almost 23,000 civilians from 87 different countries that are trapped in the Gulf and left for dead by the Iranian regime,” referring to the stranded crew members amidst the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

#USGasPrices #MiddleEastCrisis #IranTensions #StraitOfHormuz #ProjectFreedom #USBlockade #NuclearProgram #UNSanctions #HezbollahIsrael #GlobalEnergy

This report provides an update on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, particularly focusing on the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, and their impact on global markets.
