British retailers, grappling with the repercussions of the Middle East conflict, are pressing the Government to alleviate domestic financial burdens. Their aim is to help mitigate price increases for consumers.<\/p>\n
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) highlighted that a significant majority, four out of five people (80%), are apprehensive that the ongoing Middle East conflict will escalate food prices. In response, the BRC has called upon the Government to provide relief by easing pressures on businesses, specifically citing higher national insurance contributions, packaging levies, new regulatory frameworks, and escalating business energy charges.<\/p>\n
Retailers, according to the BRC, are already absorbing substantial additional costs stemming from the conflict, including surging energy and shipping expenses, which have ripple effects on sectors like fertiliser production, manufacturing, and logistics. The consortium warned that these increased costs are inevitable to reach consumers at the till in the coming months.<\/p>\n
However, the BRC emphasized that the Middle East situation is only one facet of the challenge. Retailers have also absorbed an estimated \u00a36.5 billion in additional employment costs due to rising national insurance contributions and the national living wage, alongside a new packaging tax amounting to \u00a31.6 billion.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, new regulatory ‘burdens’ are on the horizon, such as guaranteed hours provisions under the Employment Rights Act and the proposed reformulation of thousands of food lines under an updated nutrient profiling model.<\/p>\n
A BRC survey revealed that 73% of individuals anticipate the Middle East conflict will drive up prices for non-food products. Concurrently, 81% are concerned about rising energy bills, 76% about petrol and diesel costs, and 68% about potential tax increases.<\/p>\n
In early April, food retailers met with Chancellor Rachel Reeves, advocating for the removal of energy policy levies, network charges, and system fees, which currently constitute between 57% and 65% of a typical business electricity bill. They also requested a delay in the implementation of the updated nutrient profiling model for food and drink, and a review of the triple packaging levy, projected to cost retailers over \u00a32 billion annually.<\/p>\n
Helen Dickinson, BRC chief executive, stated: ‘The Middle East conflict is pushing up costs across the supply chain, and families are rightly worried. Yet, not all pressures on retailers originate from the Gulf. Increased national insurance, packaging levies, new regulations, and business energy charges are all domestic policy decisions made in Westminster, and they can be addressed there.’<\/p>\n
She added that such government action would empower retailers to maintain affordable prices for households. Dickinson pointed out that other nations are already taking steps, with Germany reducing electricity costs for businesses by shifting levies off bills, and EU leaders actively discussing similar crisis responses.<\/p>\n
‘The UK should follow suit, rather than using global instability as an excuse for inaction on self-imposed costs,’ Dickinson asserted. ‘Retailers are diligently working to keep prices down, but they cannot manage this alone. Every cost the government chooses not to tackle is a cost that will ultimately affect someone\u2019s shopping basket. This is a political choice, and ministers still have an opportunity to change course \u2013 but the window for action is closing.’<\/p>\n
