This strategic move aims to enhance transport resilience and reduce reliance on traditional, increasingly vulnerable maritime routes.

Governments across the Middle East are urgently revisiting and developing plans for new rail-sea transport corridors, alongside dusting off decades-old proposals for overland oil and gas pipelines. This concerted effort comes as a belated but critical response to the ongoing wartime disruptions affecting major maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

The impetus for these alternative routes is clear: the persistent threats to key shipping lanes and vital economic infrastructure are expected to continue even after the multi-front conflict involving the US-Israel alliance and the Iran-led Axis of Resistance eventually subsides. In this evolving geopolitical landscape, nations including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates are actively pursuing a new trade architecture, featuring multiple interconnected nodes that will link the Indian Ocean directly to the Mediterranean Sea.

Analysts describe these ambitious new projects as indicative of a “structural shift” in the Middle East’s logistics framework. The region is consciously moving away from its historical dependence on the established, yet increasingly vulnerable, infrastructure within the Persian Gulf.

Robert Mogielnicki, founder of PoliSphere Advisory, a Paris-based geoeconomic consultancy specializing in the Middle East, commented on this trend: “Eventually a return to utilising established infrastructure will resume, but that won’t necessarily fully stop structural shifts that started in the meantime.”

The proposed alternative routes for commercial cargo are designed to originate from ports in the UAE and Oman, strategically located outside the Persian Gulf. From there, goods would travel overland by rail through Saudi Arabia to Jordan, before continuing either via Egypt’s Suez Canal or through the Syrian ports of Latakia and Tartus, offering diverse and resilient pathways for international trade.

#MiddleEast #LogisticsCorridor #TradeRoutes #HormuzBypass #RegionalSecurity #SupplyChain #SaudiArabia #UAE #Turkey #Geopolitics

Riyadh, Ankara, and Abu Dhabi are spearheading a significant initiative to reshape regional trade, establishing a novel logistics corridor designed to circumvent the Strait of Hormuz.
