According to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, Iran had submitted its latest negotiation proposal to mediators in Pakistan on Thursday night. “They want to make a deal, I’m not satisfied with it, so we’ll see what happens,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday. The precarious three-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran reportedly remains in effect, despite both countries exchanging accusations of violations. Trump did not elaborate on what he perceived as the shortcomings of the latest proposal, stating, “They’re asking for things I can’t agree to.” The President noted that negotiations have continued via phone after he canceled his envoys’ trip to Pakistan last week. He expressed frustration with Iran’s leadership, describing it as fractured. “It’s a very disjointed leadership,” he remarked. “They all want to make a deal, but they’re all messed up.” While the ceasefire has largely brought an end to fighting within Iran, the U.S. and Iran remain in a tense standoff concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas transits during peacetime. A U.S. Navy blockade preventing Iranian tankers from reaching international waters has severely impacted Iran’s economy. The global economy is also experiencing pressure as Iran maintains its perceived chokehold on the strait. This week, Trump proposed a new plan aimed at reopening the crucial passageway utilized by America’s Gulf allies for their oil and gas exports. According to his social media, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi engaged in numerous calls on Friday with several regional counterparts, including those from Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Azerbaijan, to brief them on his country’s latest initiatives to resolve the conflict. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also spoke with Araghchi via phone on Friday. Kallas’s office stated that they discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and establish long-term security arrangements. Kallas has also been in contact with the EU’s Gulf partners. Pakistani officials have indicated that efforts to de-escalate tensions between Iran and the U.S. are ongoing. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif informed a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that a response from Iran was still pending. Meanwhile, Iran’s imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been urgently transferred from prison to a hospital in northwestern Iran following a “catastrophic deterioration” of her health, her foundation announced Friday. The Narges Mohammadi Foundation reported that the Nobel laureate experienced two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis. Her lawyers, who visited her a few days after the incident, believe she suffered a heart attack in late March. The foundation stated that the hospital transfer occurred “after 140 days of systematic medical neglect” since her arrest on December 12. Earlier this week, Trump informed Axios that he had rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the strait in exchange for the U.S. Navy lifting its blockade of Iranian ports. Two regional officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss closed-door negotiations between Iranian and Pakistani officials, stated earlier this week that the Iranian proposal would have postponed negotiations on the country’s nuclear program. One of the primary reasons Trump cited for initiating the war was to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Since the war commenced on February 28, at least 3,375 people have been killed in Iran, and over 2,600 in Lebanon, where new hostilities erupted between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah two days after the war’s onset, according to authorities. Additionally, 24 people have died in Israel and more than 20 in Gulf Arab states. Seventeen Israeli soldiers in Lebanon and 13 U.S. service members across the region have also been killed.
\n#USIranConflict #TrumpIran #StraitOfHormuz #IranProposal #Ceasefire #Diplomacy #MiddleEastTensions #NuclearProgram #NargesMohammadi #GlobalSecurity<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that he was “not satisfied” with Iran’s most recent proposal during negotiations aimed at ending the conflict between the two nations, rejecting the plan almost immediately upon its submission.
