However, India, recognizing the port’s critical importance, soon secured a sanctions exemption from the Trump administration to continue developing Chabahar, particularly as Afghanistan, then under a US-backed government, desperately needed Indian humanitarian aid shipped through this vital route.<\/p>\n

UAE’s OPEC Departure: A Response to Regional Pressures and Quest for Independence<\/h2>\n

Caleb Jasso, a senior policy adviser at The Institute for Energy Research, suggests that the UAE’s departure from OPEC is a direct response to escalating regional pressures and a strategic move towards greater financial independence for the Emirates.<\/p>\n

Jasso told Al Jazeera, “Given that Iran is a founding member [of OPEC] and the UAE has taken a significant amount of the brunt of Iran\u2019s attacks, there could be an underlying tone here,” adding that this ongoing conflict is “potentially the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back for them to want to leave.”<\/p>\n

He further elaborated, “They also have some of the highest known reserves [of oil] in the world, north of 100 billion barrels, so unhooking themselves from the limitations of production caps is going to bode very well for them in the long term in terms of economic recovery from what is currently going on in the region.”<\/p>\n

The analyst concluded that leaving OPEC will significantly enhance the UAE’s financial independence, enabling it to “rebuild infrastructure that has been damaged [from the war], as well as rebuilding the image of the UAE and Dubai specifically as a very safe and gem of the desert in the region.”<\/p>\n
