Total demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTK), saw a 4.8% year-on-year decrease, with international operations experiencing an even sharper fall of 5.5%. Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometers (ACTK), also declined by 4.7% compared to March 2025.

Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, attributed this decline mainly to severe disruptions at major Gulf hubs caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He also noted that the timing of the usual post-Lunar New Year slowdown contributed to the overall reduction. Despite these immediate challenges, Walsh highlighted that underlying demand trends appear strong, with the World Trade Organization and International Monetary Fund still projecting growth for 2026. He emphasized the crucial role of air cargo networks in providing flexibility to global supply chains amidst geopolitical, tariff, and operational pressures, while also pointing to fuel supply and price as upcoming tests for the industry’s resilience.

Several factors influenced the operating environment in March. Global industrial production continued its expansion, growing by 3.1% year-on-year in February, marking 38 consecutive months of growth. Global goods trade also saw a robust 8.0% increase year-on-year in February. However, jet fuel prices surged dramatically, up 106.6% year-on-year in March, alongside a 43.1% rise in crude oil prices and a staggering 320% increase in refining margins. Global manufacturing sentiment remained positive, with the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) at 51.4 and new export orders at 50.1, both above the 50-point expansion threshold, indicating favorable conditions for future air cargo demand.

Regional performance varied significantly. Middle Eastern carriers experienced the most severe impact, with demand plummeting by 54.3% year-on-year, and capacity decreasing by 52.4%. North American carriers also saw a slight decline in demand by 1.2%. In contrast, African airlines recorded the strongest growth, with demand up 7.0%, followed by Asia-Pacific (5.4% increase) and European carriers (2.2% increase). Latin America and Caribbean carriers also reported a 1.8% rise in demand.

Trade lane analysis further underscored the impact of regional conflicts. Gulf-linked corridors, such as Europe-Middle East and Middle East-Asia, suffered massive contractions of 57.6% and 58.6% respectively. Conversely, routes like Africa-Asia (+22.6%), Europe-Asia (+14.2%), and intra-Asia (+7.5%) showed strong growth, demonstrating the dynamic adjustments within global trade networks.

#AirCargo #IATA #MiddleEastConflict #GlobalTrade #SupplyChain #Logistics #EconomicImpact #FuelPrices #CargoDemand #AviationNews

Geneva – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its global air cargo market data for March 2026, revealing a significant downturn primarily driven by geopolitical tensions.
