While often stereotyped as ‘monarchists,’ younger anti-war voices are actively challenging this perception, beginning within their own families.

Public and Private Tensions

To external observers, these disagreements often appear as explosive arguments on social media or dueling protests, either celebrating or condemning US-Israeli airstrikes on the Islamic Republic. However, the most profound tensions are unfolding away from public view, within living rooms and across dinner tables, where families grapple with the complex future of Iran.

Recent polling underscores this generational divide. A March 2026 survey by the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans revealed that individuals aged 18 to 34 are less inclined to support US-Israeli strikes or US backing of opposition figures seeking political change in Iran.

Younger Iranian Americans also tend to favor diplomatic engagement, including easing sanctions rather than pursuing regime change, and express greater concern about civilian casualties in Iran.

Shifting Perspectives and Media Influence

Rei Gundo, a 26-year-old anti-war Iranian American from Michigan, shared with Middle East Eye how his upbringing, particularly around politically active Iranian women, shaped his view of the Islamic Republic as oppressive. Yet, conversations with relatives on his Black American father’s side also led him to question dominant narratives, extending this critical lens to American imperialism and racism, and subsequently to US military involvement in Iran.

This stance has led to frequent confrontations with his grandmother, who supports US intervention to remove the current government and advocates for the return of exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi. Rei observes, “America has never gone to war and toppled a government without destroying the country.”

The influence of media in shaping these differing views is significant. Older generations often rely on Persian-language satellite channels like Manoto, which has been described as presenting Iran’s recent history through a nostalgic lens, portraying the Pahlavi era as a “golden age.” Another popular outlet, Iran International, founded in 2017, has been linked to Saudi funding and criticized as a mouthpiece for hardline opponents of the Iranian government.

Sahar Sadeghi, an Iranian-American sociology professor, notes that these channels circulate largely unsubstantiated claims that nonetheless become accepted facts among monarchy-sympathetic Iranians, framing their priorities and identities. Younger Iranian Americans, having grown up in an environment where surveillance and information manipulation are assumed, tend to be more skeptical, while older generations may accept information at face value, especially if it aligns with their expectations.

From Assimilation to Disillusionment

Sunia Sadeghi, 27, recalled feeling ‘othered’ from an early age and initially embraced an American identity, viewing Iran as a repressive theocracy based on school teachings. However, her studies at the University of Michigan led to a political education that brought disillusionment with US imperial actions. “I’m not proud to be an American anymore,” she states, expressing anger toward the US.

Her parents, who immigrated before and after the 1979 revolution, view America as a potential “savior” due to the economic hardships in Iran caused by sanctions. Sunia describes her mother’s desire for the Islamic Republic’s removal as a trauma response, warning that scenarios like civil war, fragmentation, and widespread destruction could be far worse. “In order to fix your country, you still have to have a country to fix.”

Despair and Disconnection Fueling the Divide

Manijeh Moradian, a professor at Barnard College, suggests that the rise in pro-monarchist sentiment can be partly understood as a response to the crushing of grassroots movements in Iran since 2022, leading to a deep sense of despair. This despair, compounded by a severe economic crisis and constant US and Israeli messaging, leads some to believe an outside force is the only option. “When people feel so powerless that they begin to welcome intervention from forces associated with war and destruction in places like Gaza, Iraq and Afghanistan, it reflects a level of defeat that can open the door to deeply reactionary outcomes.”

Conversely, younger Iranian Americans have come of age during the Palestine solidarity movement, with many witnessing the violence in Gaza unfold in real-time. “Once you take a position against what is happening in Gaza, it becomes very difficult to see Israel as a potential liberator of your own people.”

Mahon Mahmodian, a 31-year-old anti-war Iranian American, notes that while his parents’ outlook has hardened towards removing the government at any cost, his generation takes a longer, more skeptical view shaped by a broader geopolitical context. Despite family struggles, he observes a growing mutual understanding within his own family, contrasting with the broader diaspora where a “lack of truly humanizing the person on the other side” drives division.

A Zogby Analytics survey indicates a significant shift, with nearly two-thirds of Iranian Americans now opposing the war, compared to an earlier nearly even split.

#IranianDiaspora #GenerationalDivide #IranWar #USIranRelations #RegimeChange #Diplomacy #AntiWarMovement #IranianAmericans #MediaBias #FamilyRift

Generational Divide Over Iran War Fractures Iranian-American Households The recent conflict involving the US and Iran, currently under a fragile ceasefire, has significantly deepened a generational rift within the Iranian-American diaspora.
