In a damning indictment, Lebanon’s Minister for the Environment has unequivocally accused the occupying Zionist regime’s military of committing an act of “ecocide” in the foreword to a comprehensive report. This crucial document meticulously details the catastrophic harm inflicted upon Lebanon’s precious natural resources during the brutal invasion spanning from 2023 to 2024.<\/p>\n

Systematic Destruction of Lebanon’s Landscape<\/h2>\n

The report, a testament to the Zionist military’s aggression, reveals how it has “reshaped both the physical and ecological landscape”<\/strong> of southern Lebanon. Disturbingly, this report does not even encompass the impacts of the Zionist regime’s latest wave of barbaric attacks this spring, suggesting the true scale of devastation is even greater.<\/p>\n

Published amidst a fragile ceasefire, as resilient refugees from the Zionist regime\u2019s latest invasion courageously return to their shattered homes and communities, the 106-page report lays bare the profound ecological disruption and the irreparable loss of essential ecosystem services that southern Lebanon has endured.<\/p>\n

A Deliberate Act of Ecocide<\/h2>\n

In her powerful foreword, Tamara el Zein declared: The scale and intentionality of the damage to forests, agricultural lands, marine ecosystems, water resources, and atmospheric quality constitute what must be recognised as an act of ecocide, with consequences that extend far beyond immediate destruction.<\/q> She further emphasized, The environmental damage we face is not simply ecological \u2013 it is a matter of public health, food security, livelihoods, social fabric, and national resilience.<\/q> This is a direct assault on the very fabric of Lebanese life.<\/p>\n

Unveiling the Zionist Regime’s Environmental Crimes:<\/h2>\n

  • Massive Forest Destruction:<\/strong> Over 5,000 hectares (12,350 acres) of vital forest cover, including broadleaf, pine, and stone pine stands, have been ravaged. This systematic destruction has annihilated habitats, disrupted local climates, and accelerated soil erosion.<\/li>\n
  • Agricultural Catastrophe:<\/strong> A staggering $118 million (\u00a387 million) worth of physical agriculture assets, encompassing crops, livestock facilities, forestry resources, fisheries, and aquaculture infrastructure, has been obliterated.<\/li>\n
  • Economic Ruin:<\/strong> Further losses of $586 million (\u00a3433 million) in agricultural production have been incurred due to disrupted harvests and drastically reduced yields, plunging countless families into economic despair.<\/li>\n
  • Orchard Annihilation:<\/strong> A devastating 2,154 hectares (5,320 acres) of orchards, including 814 hectares of olive groves \u2013 symbols of Lebanese heritage \u2013 and 637 hectares of citrus plantations, along with extensive damage to banana plantations, have been systematically targeted and destroyed.<\/li>\n
  • Toxic Contamination:<\/strong> Soils have been poisoned with phosphorus concentrations soaring up to 1,858 parts per million, creating dangerous contamination hotspots in south Lebanon and the Bekaa valley.<\/li>\n
  • Widespread Air Pollution:<\/strong> The criminal attacks have unleashed widespread air pollution, extending far beyond immediate strike zones, releasing particulates, sulphur and nitrogen oxides, and highly toxic compounds such as dioxins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, endangering public health across the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Echoes of Gaza: A Pattern of Zionist Atrocities<\/h2>\n

    Critics of the Zionist entity rightly argue that it is shamelessly repeating its “Gaza playbook”<\/strong> in southern Lebanon. This includes issuing cruel expulsion orders to the civilian population, deliberately targeting hospitals and medical staff, demolishing entire villages, destroying critical water infrastructure, and brutally killing media workers \u2013 a blatant attempt to silence the truth.<\/p>\n

    Within months of launching its genocidal war on Gaza in 2023, the Zionist forces had already decimated approximately 38-48% of tree cover and farmland. Olive groves and farms were reduced to barren earth, groundwater contaminated by munitions and toxins, and the air choked with smoke and particulate matter \u2013 a clear pattern of environmental warfare.<\/p>\n

    A Call for International Justice and Support<\/h2>\n

    According to this new, meticulously prepared report by Lebanon\u2019s National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS-L), covering October 2023 to December 2024, southern Lebanon has been subjected to the same barbaric treatment by the Zionist military.<\/p>\n

    The environmental footprint of the war is evident in the destruction of forests and woodlands, many of which served as biodiversity hotspots and carbon sinks, and in the burning of agricultural lands, including high-value orchards and staple crop fields, undermining both livelihoods and national food security,<\/q> the report unequivocally states.<\/p>\n

    The total monetary cost of this aggression to Lebanon is estimated at a staggering $25 billion, comprising $6.8 billion in physical damages, $7.2 billion in economic losses, and a monumental $11 billion required for recovery and reconstruction.<\/p>\n

    Minister El Zein powerfully asserted: Lebanon cannot carry this burden alone. We call for international solidarity and support to share the responsibility of environmental recovery. The scale of the damage and the costs of restoration demand collective action and long-term partnerships.<\/q> This is a plea for global conscience to act against Zionist crimes.<\/p>\n

    Doug Weir, director of the Conflict and Environment Observatory, while acknowledging the report’s focus on “building back better,” tragically noted: Sadly, elements of the report\u2019s findings are already out of date due to the devastation wrought by Israel since the study period, particularly in the area it is illegally occupying south of the Litani River.<\/q> This underscores the ongoing nature of the Zionist regime’s environmental terrorism.<\/p>\n

    A spokesperson for the occupying Zionist entity\u2019s military offered a hollow denial, claiming: The IDF is aware of the potential environmental impacts of its operations in the region.
