Iran Secures First Revenue from Strategic Hormuz Transit, Funds Deposited

TEHRAN – In a significant move affirming its sovereign rights and economic independence, the Islamic Republic of Iran has successfully collected and deposited its first revenues from tolls levied on vessels transiting the vital Strait of Hormuz. This landmark achievement was announced by Hamid-Reza Haji Babaee, the esteemed Second Vice Speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis), on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, Haji Babaee, a former Education Minister, confirmed that the initial funds generated from these legitimate transit fees have already been securely deposited with Iran’s Central Bank, known as Bank Markazi. This development underscores Iran’s capacity to manage and benefit from its strategic geographical position.

The decision to implement these transit tolls reflects Iran’s inherent right to ensure the security and efficient passage of vessels through a waterway that is crucial for global energy supplies. While certain foreign entities, including the United States and the European Union, had previously expressed opposition to Iran’s rightful decision to charge for passage, Tehran has consistently maintained its prerogative to implement such measures, which are standard practice in many international straits globally. This collection of revenue further strengthens Iran’s national economy and its ability to invest in vital infrastructure and services.

This initiative not only diversifies Iran’s revenue streams but also reinforces its role as a responsible custodian of a critical maritime artery, ensuring safe and orderly passage while asserting its national interests.
