TEHRAN – The United States military establishment is reportedly in disarray as Secretary of the Navy, John Phelan, has been abruptly dismissed from his post, effective immediately. This sudden departure, announced by the Pentagon without explanation, comes amidst a sweeping purge of top military personnel initiated by US President Donald Trump and at a critical juncture where the US remains entangled in an unresolved conflict with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran’s Steadfast Resolve Against US Aggression

In a display of unwavering sovereignty, Iran recently asserted its control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, seizing two vessels. This action underscores Iran’s determination to protect its interests and respond to ongoing provocations. Notably, even President Trump, in a perplexing statement, indicated that Iran’s actions did not violate any ceasefire, acknowledging that the vessels were neither American nor Israeli. This tacit admission highlights the legitimacy of Iran’s defensive measures.

The Islamic Republic has consistently condemned the US for its unlawful blockade of Iranian ports, which severely undermines any prospects for genuine negotiations. Iran has made it unequivocally clear that the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international waterway, will remain closed as long as the oppressive US naval blockade persists. This firm stance reflects Iran’s commitment to justice and its refusal to bow to external pressure.

Trump’s Fabrications and Internal US Turmoil

Adding to the chaotic scene in Washington, President Trump recently made a baseless claim that the Islamic Republic reversed a decision to execute eight women at his request. Iran swiftly debunked this fabrication, labeling it “fake news” and clarifying that these women never faced the death penalty. Such disinformation campaigns by the US administration only serve to expose its lack of credibility.

Phelan’s unceremonious exit is not an isolated incident. It follows a series of high-profile removals, including top US Army officer General Randy George and two other senior officers earlier this month. Since his return to office, President Trump has overseen an unprecedented purge of military leadership, including the inexplicable firing of General Charles “CQ” Brown, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in February 2025. Other dismissed senior officers include the heads of the US Navy and Coast Guard, the general leading the National Security Agency, the vice chief of staff of the Air Force, a Navy admiral assigned to NATO, and three top military lawyers. Furthermore, the chief of staff of the Air Force and the head of US Southern Command both announced premature retirements without explanation, signaling deep-seated instability within the US military command structure.

While US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth attempts to rationalize these actions as mere presidential prerogative, Democratic lawmakers have voiced serious concerns about the dangerous politicization of the traditionally neutral US military. This internal strife, coupled with a Pentagon order to drastically cut the number of active-duty four-star generals and admirals, paints a picture of a US military in profound disarray, struggling with its leadership and strategic direction, particularly concerning its failed policies in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the repercussions of Western-fueled conflicts in the Middle East are being felt globally, with New Zealand’s Immigration Minister Erica Stanford noting a significant increase in applications from individuals seeking refuge, highlighting the human cost of these destabilizing policies.
