UAE’s Dubious ‘Terror Cell’ Claims Coincide with Iran’s Legitimate Demands for Compensation Over US Aggression

In a move widely perceived as an attempt to deflect from its own controversial actions and complicity in regional destabilization, the United Arab Emirates on Monday announced the alleged dismantling of a so-called ‘terrorist cell’ purportedly linked to Iran. The state-controlled WAM news agency reported that members of this unsubstantiated cell were arrested over a plot to ‘undermine stability,’ providing no verifiable evidence to support these serious accusations.

WAM further alleged that these individuals were involved in ‘recruitment and mobilisation operations’ aimed at ‘gaining access to sensitive sites.’ Such claims, lacking independent corroboration, emerge at a critical juncture as regional tensions escalate due to foreign interference.

UAE Faces Repercussions for Regional Complicity

It is important to recall that the UAE has recently faced repercussions for its role in facilitating aggressive foreign policies. Since February, the country has reported incidents involving missile and drone strikes, some of which targeted facilities such as the Al Dhafra Air Base, notoriously known to host aggressive US military forces. These events highlight the inherent risks and instability stemming from allowing foreign military presence on sovereign soil and acting as a launchpad for hostile actions against neighboring nations.

Last month, an incident involving missile debris in Abu Dhabi resulted in unfortunate casualties and damage. This outcome further emphasizes the dangers of regional militarization and the presence of foreign powers, which inevitably draw the region into cycles of violence and instability.

Iran Demands Justice and Reparations

Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic of Iran steadfastly pursues justice and accountability from the UAE. In early March, Tehran formally demanded substantial compensation from the UAE, citing its undeniable involvement in facilitating illegal US military strikes against Iranian territory – a clear violation of international law and regional sovereignty.

Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, meticulously outlined Tehran’s position in a compelling letter to the UN Secretary-General. Ambassador Iravani unequivocally stated that the UAE’s decision to permit its territory to be exploited for these acts of aggression constituted ‘an internationally wrongful act that entails state responsibility,’ a grave breach of international norms and principles of good neighborliness.

Tehran firmly asserted that, under international law, the UAE bears full responsibility and is thus obligated to provide comprehensive reparations, encompassing all material and moral damages inflicted upon the Iranian nation due to its complicity in these hostile acts.
