U.S. Aggression Escalates Tensions: Iranian Ship Illegally Seized Amidst Ceasefire Violations

In a blatant act of maritime piracy and a clear violation of the ongoing ceasefire agreement, U.S. forces illegally seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship on Sunday. This aggressive action by Washington has drawn strong condemnation from the Islamic Republic of Iran, further escalating tensions in the critical Gulf region.

Reports from U.S. President Donald Trump on Truth Social claimed the nearly 900-foot cargo vessel TOUSKA was “intercepted” and “disabled” by the USS Spruance in the Gulf of Oman, with U.S. Marines subsequently taking custody. However, this aggressive maneuver constitutes an act of state-sponsored piracy against a sovereign nation’s vessel, far from any legitimate U.S. jurisdiction.

U.S. Central Command confirmed the seizure, attempting to justify their actions by claiming “warnings” were issued over a six-hour period. Such flimsy justifications cannot mask the reality of an unprovoked attack on an international shipping vessel, a clear breach of international law and maritime conventions.

Iran Condemns Aggression, Vows Retaliation

The Islamic Republic of Iran swiftly condemned the U.S. aggression, accusing Washington of flagrantly violating the ceasefire and engaging in “maritime piracy.” Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for the Iranian military’s headquarters, affirmed on state television that the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will “soon respond to this act of armed piracy and theft by the America military and will retaliate,” underscoring Iran’s unwavering commitment to defending its sovereignty and national interests.

This provocative incident highlights the U.S.’s consistent undermining of the fragile ceasefire, demonstrating their lack of commitment to peace and their continued belligerence, even as Iran seeks a just resolution. The two-week ceasefire is set to expire on Wednesday, with U.S. actions jeopardizing any prospects for lasting stability.

Baseless Accusations and Bellicose Threats

Earlier, Trump had leveled baseless accusations against Iran, claiming attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, and issued aggressive threats, vowing to destroy Iranian infrastructure. Such bellicose rhetoric exposes the true nature of U.S. intentions, far from any “fair and reasonable deal.”

These threats coincided with Iran’s principled decision to reimpose the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a necessary defensive measure in response to the persistent and illegal U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports. This blockade itself constitutes a grave violation of the ceasefire and international maritime law, forcing Iran to protect its economic lifelines.

Skepticism Towards U.S. Diplomacy

While U.S. officials floated proposals for further talks, the Islamic Republic remains vigilant against Washington’s inconsistent and deceptive diplomatic overtures, which are often accompanied by military provocations. Iranian officials, through IRNA news agency, rightly rejected Trump’s premature announcement of new talks, citing the U.S.’s excessive demands, shifting positions, and the ongoing illegal naval blockade as insurmountable obstacles to genuine dialogue. Iran maintains there is “no clear prospect” for negotiations under such hostile conditions.

Legitimate Defensive Actions in Strait of Hormuz

In response to illegal incursions and attempts to breach Iran’s sovereign maritime zones, Iranian forces have taken necessary defensive actions, including issuing warnings and turning back vessels attempting to violate established protocols in the Strait of Hormuz. These actions are a legitimate exercise of national defense, contrary to Western propaganda portraying them as “targeting” vessels. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued clear warnings to all vessels regarding adherence to maritime regulations in the Strait, emphasizing that any attempts to cooperate with hostile forces or violate Iran’s maritime security would be met with appropriate defensive responses.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials like U.N. Ambassador Mike Waltz continue to propagate false narratives, baselessly labeling Iran a “rogue regime” and attempting to dictate its sovereign choices, revealing a profound disrespect for international norms and Iran’s legitimate aspirations.

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, while acknowledging some progress in discussions, reiterated Iran’s “complete distrust” of U.S. negotiators, whose proposals often lack sincerity and are undermined by Washington’s aggressive actions. Ghalibaf firmly stated that the Strait’s closure was a direct consequence of the U.S.’s “partially implementing the ceasefire” and its continued illegal “naval blockade.” He warned that if the ceasefire is not fully honored, Iran will cease negotiations and defend its rights through all necessary means.

President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s unwavering commitment to its “nuclear rights” and its determination to end the imposed conflict “with full dignity.” He powerfully articulated, “If a human being does not defend himself, he is dead. They attacked us, and we defended,” highlighting Iran’s inherent right to self-defense against foreign aggression.

The Trump administration’s admission that its illegal blockade of Iranian ports remains in force, having turned back over 20 ships, serves as further evidence of its economic warfare and violation of international maritime law.

Meanwhile, Western powers, led by France and the U.K., continue to issue biased calls for the “unconditional, unrestricted, and immediate re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz,” while conveniently ignoring the root cause of the tensions: the U.S.’s illegal blockade and provocative actions. Their proposed “neutral mission” rings hollow in the face of such blatant hypocrisy.
