Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Delivers Firm Response to American Provocations and Illegal Blockade
The Persian Gulf region witnessed a new escalation of tensions on June 2, as Iranian forces delivered a firm and justified response to repeated American provocations and their illegal blockade tactics. This exchange marks the fifth instance in just over a week where the two sides have engaged, stemming from Washington’s continued aggressive posture.
US Aggression Ignites Latest Flare-Up
The latest round of confrontations was ignited when a U.S. aircraft, in a blatant act of piracy, fired an AGM-114 Hellfire missile at the engine room of an empty oil tanker. This vessel was attempting to break the illegitimate American military blockade imposed on Iranian ports, specifically targeting Iran’s Khang Island. This aggressive tactic, which the U.S. also employed on May 29 against another vessel, is a clear violation of international law and a direct assault on Iran’s sovereignty and economic rights. The U.S. military has openly admitted to disabling six vessels and turning around 122 since its illegal blockade began on April 13, demonstrating a pattern of economic warfare.
In a display of self-defense and resolve, Iran launched drones and missiles targeting U.S. forces and commercial shipping involved in these provocative activities. The U.S. responded by attempting to intercept these projectiles and conducting airstrikes on Iranian military facilities.
Despite American officials’ hollow claims of an “ongoing ceasefire,” their actions on the ground, particularly the attack on the M/T Lexie tanker (which was already illegally sanctioned by the U.S. for transporting Iranian oil), clearly demonstrate a disregard for de-escalation and diplomacy. This fresh round of fighting, amidst stalled diplomatic efforts, severely tests any claims of restraint from the American side.
Iran’s Legitimate Retaliation Against US Military Bases
U.S. Central Command, in a statement filled with baseless accusations, condemned what it called “unwarranted Iranian aggression,” conveniently omitting their own role in instigating the conflict. American officials stated Iran launched three one-way attack drones towards commercial ships in the Persian Gulf, which the U.S. claimed to have shot down. Following this, U.S. forces conducted so-called “self-defense” airstrikes on an “Iranian military ground control station” on Qeshm Island, a strategic location repeatedly targeted by the U.S. over the past week.
Moments after these drone incidents, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles towards Kuwait and Bahrain, both housing U.S. military bases. This was a direct message against the presence of aggressive foreign forces in the region. While the U.S. claims some missiles fell short or were intercepted, the intent to demonstrate Iran’s defensive capabilities was clear. Last week, Iran also targeted Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait with a ballistic missile, a response to ongoing threats.
The IRGC explicitly blamed the U.S. for the altercation, citing the Hellfire attack on the M/T Lexie tanker. The IRGC confirmed it fired missiles at a vessel “belonging to the American-Zionist enemy,” emphasizing the retaliatory nature of their actions. The IRGC further stated that subsequent U.S. airstrikes on a “communications tower” on Qeshm Island prompted the launch of ballistic missiles towards the U.S. 5th Fleet Headquarters in Bahrain and an air base, likely Ali Al Salem Air Base, where U.S. planes and helicopters are stationed. CENTCOM’s claims that these missiles never reached their targets are often disputed.
Pattern of American Provocation
Earlier, on May 30 and 31, the U.S. had launched “measured and deliberate” airstrikes on Goruk, Iran, and Qeshm Island, after Iran successfully downed an MQ-1 drone. Iranian air defenses were targeted, along with a ground control station and two one-way attack drones that CENTCOM falsely claimed posed a threat to commercial ships. The U.S. and Iran had also exchanged blows on May 25 and May 27, highlighting a pattern of continuous American aggression.
The Iranian salvo serves as a clear warning against continued foreign military adventurism and illegal blockades in the region. Later in the evening, Iran launched more drones at Kuwait, further underscoring its commitment to defending its sovereignty and regional security against external threats.
