Travel Counsellors Poised for Record Year Amidst Middle East Turmoil
Despite ongoing challenges stemming from the Middle East conflict, Travel Counsellors remains firmly on track for what promises to be a record-breaking year. Recent sales figures show a strong recovery, with the past four weeks registering an impressive 8% increase year-on-year.
Steve Byrne, Chief Executive of the prominent homeworking agency, acknowledged the market’s current toughness. “It seems to be coming back, but there’s no doubt the market is tougher than it was [before the war],” Byrne stated. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence in achieving double-digit growth this year and building a robust foundation for 2027. “We’re delivering record revenue and record profit this year…unless things get drastically worse,” he added, emphasizing that even if current conditions persist, the company anticipates another record year, albeit one that “would have been even better without this.”
Strategic Focus and Market Resilience
Byrne has been actively engaging with agents at the company’s annual TC Together events across the UK, sharing insights on sales trends and customer service excellence. He highlighted the significant market opportunity, particularly the fact that consumers are increasingly prioritizing travel. While acknowledging “short-term more challenging times,” especially concerning travel to or via the Middle East, Byrne underscored a “much bigger medium-term opportunity.”
Since the onset of the Middle East disruption, the overall trend, excluding rebookings, has been broadly flat year-on-year. However, the agency has successfully rebooked approximately 70% of affected clients, offering options for later dates or alternative destinations. Notably, about 15% of the company’s revenue typically originates from sales to or through the Middle East, with roughly 4,000 bookings impacted by the crisis.
The Mediterranean market, which experienced a “soft” period for about four weeks, is now showing signs of recovery, with prices remaining stable while increasing elsewhere. Greece, in particular, is performing well, partly due to the relaxation of the European Entry-Exit System. Byrne anticipates a “strong” rebound in the Middle East once the Foreign Office lifts its advice against non-essential travel.
Premium Travel and Digital Innovation Drive Growth
Travel Counsellors’ strategic focus on premium leisure travel is yielding significant dividends, as this segment proves “more resilient” than non-premium bookings. The corporate business also reports “good volume growth” over the past six to eight weeks. Byrne specifically noted “significant growth in luxury cruising, river cruising and expedition cruising,” highlighting that cruising continues its strong performance observed before the crisis.
Further positive trends include “good growth” in South Africa, an “encouraging” recovery in the US, and year-on-year growth in Japan. Despite describing the overall market as “more challenging,” Byrne identified “real winners” within its segments. Premium leisure now constitutes 60% of the agency’s sales, facilitated by the Phenix platform or pre-made holidays through TC Journeys and partner operators. The agency’s long-haul, premium focus results in a longer lead time of approximately 150 days from booking to departure, meaning fewer last-minute bookings.
Even short-haul beach holidays, though not the primary focus, have seen a pickup in the last four weeks after a tough preceding period. Forward bookings into 2027 are impressively up by 27%.
Technological innovation is also a key driver. Travel Counsellors’ AI tool, TC Co-Pilot, boasts an “absolutely massive” adoption rate of 70% and a 90% satisfaction rating. “It has proven to be an invaluable time-saver for Travel Counsellors to create personalised travel recommendations or personalised travel content for their social channels – and sources for their information, reducing demand on our support centre,” Byrne explained.
Collaborative Models and Industry Recognition
Another significant trend is the rise of the TC Teams model, where agents collaborate to develop their businesses, sharing tasks such as fulfillment, research, customer engagement, and social media. “Two thirds of Travel Counsellors are now working in some type of collaborative way, and the earnings of people who work in a collaborative way are higher than those that don’t,” Byrne revealed. This model enhances recruitment, retention, and enables business scaling in a cost-effective manner.
Byrne emphasized the critical role of TC Teams and agent support in the agency’s recent achievement of the King’s Enterprise Award for innovation. This adds to their previous accolades, including the Queen’s Award for Innovation in 2003, and for International Trade in 2014 and 2020.
“Our Travel Counsellors have done an outstanding job, looking after their customers that have been affected, and they are going to get the benefit of that, with more than two thirds rebooked, and others over time,” Byrne affirmed. He stressed the ongoing investment in technology to provide “the very best combination of the human touch and the tech,” ensuring that members of the Travel Counsellors community feel supported even in a challenging macro environment.
The agency currently supports over 1,700 agents in the UK, having recruited 110-120 this year. Globally, Travel Counsellors has expanded to a community of over 4,000 travel business owners across seven countries, including the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa, the UAE, and North America.
This year’s eight TC Together events are being held in major UK cities like London, Bristol, Essex, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, and Edinburgh, with approximately two-thirds of homeworkers attending for updates, panels, and peer-to-peer learning. At the London event, Byrne recognized Sejal Majithia-Jaswal, Suzi Smith, and Andreea Spasova for their exceptional customer service. Spasova expressed her pride, stating, “This business, and Travel Counsellors at its heart, is built on something far more meaningful: relationships, trust, and genuine care. I am so happy to be recognised for my endeavours to go above and beyond for every single person who places their travel dreams in my hands.”
