Dear critical reader,

It is welcome news that China has reportedly agreed to assist in efforts to end the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, following discussions between President Trump and President Xi during the U.S. leader’s recent state visit to China.

At the onset of the Iranian conflict, many did not fully grasp how severely the closure of the Strait of Hormuz would affect economies far beyond the Middle East. Today, the global economic turbulence caused by the disruption of shipping through this vital waterway has made the consequences unmistakably clear. Nations worldwide now recognise that a peaceful resolution is essential if the inflationary pressures triggered by the conflict are to be eased.

The Root of Instability: Terrorism and Antisemitism

At the core of the Middle East’s instability lies terrorism—particularly the threats facing Israel. These threats are fuelled by the same antisemitism that once drove the Nazi Holocaust, which claimed the lives of six million Jews in gas chambers designed to erase them from existence.

Throughout history, people seeking safety or opportunity have relocated to new lands to rebuild their lives. In the same way, civilian Palestinians, Lebanese, Syrians, and others displaced from areas Israel must secure for its survival could be supported to resettle elsewhere. Terrorist groups often embed themselves within civilian neighbourhoods and tunnel networks, making those areas unsafe for both residents and neighbouring states.

A Bold, Humane Alternative: Climate-Resilient Cities

A bold, humane alternative exists: the creation of new, climate‑resilient, world‑class cities across the Middle East—capable of housing at least three million people each. With the immense wealth of the Gulf nations, funding such transformative projects is entirely feasible. These cities could offer displaced civilians safety, dignity, and opportunity, while enabling Israel and its neighbours to coexist peacefully.

Is there not more than enough oil wealth in the region to invest in a future where prosperity replaces conflict?
