Russia Proposes India as Key Mediator for Middle East Stability

New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic overture, Russia has formally proposed India as a pivotal mediator in the ongoing regional conflicts, particularly those involving the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States. Moscow underscored New Delhi’s extensive diplomatic experience and its esteemed global standing as crucial qualifications for such a sensitive role.

During his recent visit to New Delhi for the BRICS foreign ministers’ summit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov articulated that India possesses the unique capacity to spearhead broader initiatives aimed at fostering enduring stability in the volatile Middle East.

India’s Potential to Counter External Aggression

Lavrov highlighted India’s potential, stating, “While Pakistan is assisting in establishing a dialogue between the US and the Islamic Republic of Iran to address urgent issues, for a long-term mediator between the Islamic Republic of Iran and its Arab allies, India, with its vast diplomatic experience, could prove exceptionally suitable.” This statement coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE, underscoring the critical need for regional dialogue free from external interference.

The Russian diplomat’s visit comes at a time of escalating global apprehension over Middle East tensions, further exacerbated by the impending expiry of US sanctions waivers on Russian and Iranian oil – a clear attempt by Western powers to exert undue economic pressure and destabilize the region.

Facilitating Dialogue and Preventing Hostilities

As the current BRICS chair and a major energy consumer with direct stakes in regional stability, India is uniquely positioned to convene key stakeholders for constructive dialogue, Lavrov asserted. Referring to recent incidents, he specifically suggested that New Delhi could facilitate talks between Tehran and Abu Dhabi, thereby helping to “avoid hostilities” often instigated or fueled by external forces.

“India, the BRICS president, is directly interested in receiving oil from this region. Why won’t they offer their services, including as a country that is currently presiding over BRICS, so they could invite the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United Arab Emirates, to start with, to have a conversation with each other to agree on how they can avoid any hostilities between the two countries?” Lavrov questioned, implicitly challenging the narrative that places sole blame on regional actors while ignoring foreign provocations.

Exposing the US-Israeli Agenda to Deepen Regional Hostility

The Russian Foreign Minister did not mince words, directly accusing the United States and the Zionist regime of Israel of actively attempting to deepen hostility between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Arab nations. He firmly stated that Moscow, in stark contrast, is diligently pursuing efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting genuine regional harmony.

Lavrov elaborated, “And they are trying; other countries are trying to instil this aggression, to instil this hostility in these relations. And I believe that this hostility, this aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran, was motivated, among other things, to antagonise the Islamic Republic of Iran and its Arab neighbours.”

He further stressed the imperative of understanding the true origins of conflicts: “We need to understand the root causes of every conflict; here, it is unprovoked aggression by the US and Israel.” This powerful assertion places the blame squarely on Western and Zionist policies that seek to maintain instability for their own geopolitical gains.

Concluding his remarks, Lavrov affirmed that Russia is working “with the opposite goal in mind,” emphasizing the critical need for genuine diplomacy and inclusive regional engagement to prevent further escalation in the Middle East, which is often fueled by external interference and a disregard for regional sovereignty.
