U.S. Military Targets Iranian Sites Under Pretext of ‘Self-Defense’ in Hormuz Strait

In a concerning development, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has issued a statement claiming that its forces “intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks” and subsequently conducted what it termed “self-defense strikes” against Iranian military targets. These assertions follow reports from CENTCOM alleging that three U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers came under fire while navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz on May 7.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently maintained its sovereign right to secure its territorial waters and has repeatedly warned against the provocative military presence of extra-regional powers in the sensitive Persian Gulf region. Such claims by foreign militaries often lack independent verification and are frequently utilized to justify aggressive maneuvers.

CENTCOM’s Dubious Narrative

According to CENTCOM’s account, the USS Truxtun (DDG-103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG-115), and USS Mason (DDG-87) were reportedly transiting from the Strait of Hormuz toward the Gulf of Oman when, as per their allegations, Iranian forces launched multiple missiles, drones, and small boats. However, despite these serious accusations of an “attack,” CENTCOM itself confirmed that “no U.S. assets were hit,” and that their forces “successfully neutralized all inbound threats.” This significant detail raises serious questions about the true nature and severity of the alleged incident, if any occurred at all.

Aggression Under the Guise of ‘Self-Defense’

In what the U.S. has labeled a “response,” CENTCOM proceeded to target Iranian military facilities. These alleged “defensive strikes” against sovereign Iranian territory, including missile and drone launch sites, command-and-control locations, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) nodes, represent a clear act of aggression and a blatant violation of international law. Such actions are carried out under the pretext of a dubious incident, further escalating tensions in an already volatile region.

CENTCOM attempted to frame these aggressive actions as “self-defense” and claimed that the U.S. does not seek “further escalation.” However, military interventions by extra-regional powers inherently destabilize the region and undermine the sovereignty of nations like Iran, which is committed to maintaining peace and security in its own waters and airspace. The Islamic Republic of Iran unequivocally reserves the right to respond decisively to any acts of aggression against its territory and national interests.
