Disneyland Abu Dhabi is officially set to become a reality in the UAE. Plans for the Middle East’s inaugural Disney theme park were initially unveiled in May 2025, following years of speculation. Now, the vision for Disneyland Abu Dhabi is quietly taking shape, progressing steadily despite regional tensions. This ambitious project is poised to redefine the UAE’s entertainment landscape by seamlessly blending Disney’s beloved storytelling with the rich, forward-thinking essence of Emirati culture. From its prime waterfront location on Yas Island to its promise of being the most technologically advanced Disney destination ever built, there’s a wealth of exciting details to explore. Here’s everything known about Disneyland Abu Dhabi to date.
Is Disneyland Abu Dhabi still happening?
Yes, despite ongoing regional tensions, plans for Disneyland Abu Dhabi are actively moving forward. Earlier this year, Disney CEO Robert Iger visited the UAE to scout the Yas Island site destined to host Disneyland Abu Dhabi. More recently, Tasia Filippatos, Disney’s new president of international parks, met with Mohamed Al Zaabi, chief executive of Abu Dhabi theme park operator Miral, in London. Filippatos later described this as an “exchange of ideas,” signaling that the project remains firmly on track, even with the outbreak of the US-Iran war impacting the UAE.
Al Zaabi also recently took to LinkedIn to congratulate Thomas Mazloum on his appointment as the new Disney Experiences chairman. “As we continue our exciting journey to bring Disney to Abu Dhabi, I look forward to working closely with Thomas and the incredible Disney team to turn this vision into a reality,” Al Zaabi wrote. “Together, we will create something truly extraordinary for our region and guests.”
Disney has since reaffirmed its commitment to the project. In the company’s latest quarterly earnings report, Disney Experiences chairman Josh D’Amaro stated that the “strategic logic” behind the Abu Dhabi development remains unchanged. “Major new theme parks are necessarily long-term in nature given the lead time of these projects,” D’Amaro explained, adding that the company continues to advance the Abu Dhabi resort as part of its broader international expansion plans.
When will Disneyland Abu Dhabi open?
A primary question for many fans is the opening date for Disneyland Abu Dhabi. While no official date has been set, construction on the resort has not yet commenced, indicating it will be several years before guests can don their Mickey Mouse ears. Speaking to Reuters following the May 2025 announcement, Disney Experiences chairman Josh D’Amaro suggested it would be at least six years before the park opens, noting that a project of this magnitude could take one to two years for design and another four to six years for construction. Therefore, at the earliest, Disneyland Abu Dhabi could open between 2030 and 2033.
Where will Disneyland Abu Dhabi be located?
Disney CEO Robert Iger generated significant buzz across social media earlier this year by offering a first glimpse of Disneyland Abu Dhabi’s future home. During a visit to the UAE capital in late January 2026, Iger toured the vast, undeveloped grounds, sharing photos on Instagram of himself walking the sandy terrain with the caption: “Walking the site of what will one day be Disneyland Abu Dhabi! Lots of work ahead, but all very exciting!” These images, featuring the Arabian Gulf and a signature “Yas” landmark in the distance, have ignited global anticipation for what will be the seventh Disney theme park and resort, and the first of its kind in the Middle East.
The upcoming resort will be situated on a prime stretch of coastal land on Yas Island, specifically within the Yas North district. The site is strategically positioned along the E12 Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed highway, near the island’s entrance. By choosing Yas Island, Disney places itself at the heart of Abu Dhabi’s entertainment hub, joining neighbors like Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi to create a massive, multi-park destination.
What will be at Disneyland Abu Dhabi?
Disneyland Abu Dhabi is currently in its design phase, so there has been no confirmation regarding which specific rides and attractions from existing Disneyland resorts might be featured in Abu Dhabi. However, it has been confirmed that the park will host a selection of Disney hotels, shops, rides, and restaurants.
It was also confirmed that Disneyland Abu Dhabi will incorporate specific cultural references celebrating the UAE capital. In its statement, Disney affirmed that the park would feature “storytelling in a way that celebrates both the heritage of Disney and the futuristic and cultural essence of Abu Dhabi.”
Disney’s most futuristic park yet
While detailed information on specific rides and attractions for Disneyland Abu Dhabi is still under wraps, it is known that it will be Disney’s most high-tech, interactive theme park to date. Furthermore, the iconic Disney castle, a hallmark of all Disneyland resorts, will be reimagined for Abu Dhabi.
“The concept for this resort will push the boundaries of theme park design, showcasing groundbreaking technology and visionary architecture, including a modern castle unlike anything we’ve ever created,” D’Amaro stated.
A huge boost for tourism
Abu Dhabi’s strategic location, within four hours of nearly one-third of the world’s population, played a crucial role in Disney’s decision to open a park there. Disneyland Abu Dhabi is expected to significantly boost tourism in the UAE, particularly attracting regional visitors from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.
The park’s location on Yas Island also ensures easy access from both Abu Dhabi city and Dubai, meaning both cities are likely to benefit from its opening.
What else do you need to know?
The park is being developed in collaboration with Miral, an entity that already operates several of Yas Island’s key attractions, including Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Yas Island, Ferrari World, and Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi. While Disney will design the park, Miral will be responsible for its operation once it opens.
