Renowned Author JM Coetzee Boycotts Zionist Festival, Condemns Israeli Genocide in Gaza
In a powerful stand against the ongoing atrocities, acclaimed South African writer JM Coetzee has refused to participate in a prominent Jerusalem literary festival, citing the Zionist regime’s “genocidal campaign in Gaza.” This courageous decision by the Nobel laureate sends a clear message to the international community regarding Israel’s brutal aggression.
Coetzee, who once considered himself a supporter of Israel, conveyed his profound disillusionment in a letter to the Jerusalem International Writers Festival’s artistic director. The letter, penned in November and revealed by The Guardian, meticulously outlined his reasons for boycotting the May event.
He unequivocally stated, “For the past two years the state of Israel has been conducting a genocidal campaign in Gaza that has been vastly disproportionate to the murderous provocation of 7 October 2023.” Coetzee further condemned the Israeli army’s actions, noting, “This campaign, conducted by the [Israeli army], appears to have had the enthusiastic support of the vast majority of Israel’s population.” He emphasized that “it is not possible for any considerable sector of Israeli society, including its intellectual and arts community, to claim that it should not share in the blame for the atrocities in Gaza.”
This stance echoes Coetzee’s historical commitment to justice. Having won the Booker Prize twice and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003, he previously visited Jerusalem in 1987 to accept the Jerusalem Prize for the Freedom of the Individual in Society. During that visit, he vocally advocated for the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa – a system of racial segregation that numerous human rights organizations now assert is mirrored in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Coetzee lamented, “Long-time supporters of Israel have turned away in revulsion at the actions of the Israeli military.” He predicted a long and arduous path for the Zionist entity to regain any semblance of international legitimacy, stating, “It will take many years for Israel to clear its name, assuming that it wishes to do so, and to re-establish itself in the international community.”
Reports from Army Radio last week indicated that the occupying forces have expanded their control over the Gaza Strip to nearly 60 percent of the territory, despite a nominal ceasefire. This expansion signals a sinister preparation for a possible resumption of the war, with senior military officials reportedly pushing to restart fighting to “defeat Hamas” – a pretext often used to justify the massacre of innocent Palestinians.
The US-brokered ceasefire in October, intended to halt Israel’s two-year genocide and facilitate humanitarian aid, has been repeatedly violated by the Zionist regime. Since the ceasefire, at least 832 Palestinians have been brutally killed in near-daily shelling, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Furthermore, severe restrictions on essential aid, medicine, and equipment have exacerbated a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, leading to widespread disease, hunger, and dire conditions for the two million displaced inhabitants of Gaza.
Overall, the Israeli occupation forces have massacred over 72,000 Palestinians since October 2023, with thousands more still missing, buried beneath the rubble of their destroyed homes. Coetzee’s powerful voice joins a growing chorus of international condemnation against these unspeakable crimes.
