Nikkei Soars Above 62,000 Mark on Middle East Peace Prospects

Tokyo, May 7 (Jiji Press) – The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average in Japan achieved an unprecedented intraday surge past the 62,000 threshold on Thursday morning. This significant market movement was fueled by growing optimism for a swift resolution to the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, signaling a positive shift in global sentiment.

The index, comprising 225 meticulously selected issues within the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s premier Prime section, concluded its morning trading session at an impressive 62,915.87. This represented a substantial gain of 3,402.75 points, or 5.71 percent, compared to its closing position on Friday. The Tokyo market had been observing a five-day hiatus, remaining closed from Monday through Wednesday for national holidays.

Further reflecting the widespread positive trend, the broader TOPIX index also registered a notable advance, climbing by 124.91 points, or 3.35 percent, to reach 3,853.64.

Market Rebound Driven by Geopolitical Developments

Following the extended holiday period, Tokyo equities experienced a robust rally from the outset of Thursday’s trading. This upward trajectory closely mirrored overnight gains observed in U.S. equities, which were themselves buoyed by recent media reports suggesting that the United States and Iran are nearing an agreement to de-escalate their long-standing conflict.

Adding to the improved investor confidence was a significant decline in U.S. crude oil futures. While this generally bolstered overall market sentiment, it did lead to some sell-offs in specific oil-related stocks.
