Israel has given its definitive approval to a significant plan for acquiring two new combat squadrons, comprising advanced F-35 and F-15IA fighter aircraft. This multi-billion dollar deal, involving leading aerospace manufacturers Lockheed Martin and Boeing, was confirmed by the defense ministry on Sunday.

The procurement, sanctioned by Israel’s Ministerial Committee on Procurement, marks a crucial initial phase in a broader 350 billion shekel (approximately $119 billion) initiative. This extensive plan aims to substantially enhance Israel’s military capabilities and “strengthen readiness ahead of a demanding decade for Israeli security,” according to official statements.

These newly acquired squadrons are slated to form a cornerstone of the military’s long-term force development strategy. Their deployment is intended to address evolving regional threats and to safeguard Israel’s strategic air superiority in the coming years.

Amir Baram, director general of the defense ministry, emphasized the long-term vision behind the acquisition. “Alongside immediate wartime procurement needs, we have a responsibility to act now to secure the IDF’s military edge ten years from now and beyond,” Baram stated, referring to the Israel Defense Forces. He also highlighted that the recent conflict with Iran underscored the critical importance of the US-Israel strategic relationship and the indispensable role of advanced air power.

Under the terms of the agreement, Israel will purchase a fourth F-35 squadron from Lockheed Martin and a second squadron of F-15IA fighter jets from Boeing. It was noted that Boeing had previously secured an $8.6 billion contract in December, which included 25 new F-15IAs with an option for an additional 25 aircraft.

Baram indicated that the subsequent step involves finalizing the agreements with the US government and its military counterparts. The report also mentioned that the US and Israel had launched airstrikes on Iran on February 28, followed by a ceasefire on April 8, and that the US Navy maintains a blockade of Iranian ports.

Defense Minister Israel Katz commented on the Iranian conflict, asserting that it demonstrated the formidable power of the air force and its decisive role in protecting Israel. “The lessons of that campaign require us to keep pressing forward on force buildup, to ensure air superiority for decades to come,” Katz affirmed.

Furthermore, Israeli aircraft have been actively engaged against Iranian-backed Hamas militants in Gaza and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, particularly since the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Katz also projected that the new aircraft would herald a significant technological advancement, integrating autonomous flight capabilities, next-generation defense systems, and bolstering Israeli military dominance in space. “Our mission is clear: to ensure the IDF has the tools, capabilities, and strength to operate anywhere, at any time,” Katz declared. “We will continue to invest, to grow stronger, and to stay ahead of our enemies – to keep Israel secure today and in the future.”
