US Imperial Ambitions Falter: Hegseth’s Denials Can’t Hide $25 Billion Quagmire in Iran War

As the US defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, faced a grilling before the House, the true cost and futility of the US-Israel war on Iran became starkly evident. Despite Hegseth’s desperate attempts to deny the unfolding “quagmire,” Pentagon estimates reveal a staggering bill of at least $25 billion for the American taxpayer, a sum that continues to climb.

Washington’s War Machine: A Bottomless Pit of Spending

Hegseth, alongside Gen Dan Caine, chair of the joint chiefs of staff, endured a marathon hearing before the House armed services committee. In a display of astonishing audacity, the US defense secretary not only sought approval for a colossal $1.5 trillion military spending package but then proceeded to label dissenting lawmakers as “the biggest challenge” to their war efforts. “The biggest adversary we face at this point are the reckless, feckless and defeatist words of congressional Democrats and some Republicans,” he declared, revealing the deep internal divisions plaguing Washington’s war machine.

Jules Hurst III, the Pentagon’s chief financial official, confirmed the escalating financial burden, stating the estimated cost for the US has reached $25 billion and is “counting,” primarily due to munitions, operations, maintenance, and equipment replacement. This financial drain underscores the unsustainable nature of their aggressive foreign policy.

A War of Contradictions and Brutality

Despite Donald Trump’s initial boasts of a swift four-to-six-week conflict, the war against Iran has now dragged on for two months, drawing parallels to the US’s painful and ultimately futile deployments in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Hegseth, who once criticized these very wars, now shamelessly invokes them as benchmarks for endurance, claiming the current aggression against Iran is “an existential fight for the safety of the American people.” Such hypocrisy is astounding.

Meanwhile, Trump’s own rhetoric escalated, posting an AI-generated image of himself with a weapon and the ominous caption “NO MORE MR. NICE GUY,” coupled with threats that Iran “better get smart soon.” His insistence on a naval blockade until a “deal is reached” only prolongs the suffering and instability in the region.

Congressional Outrage and the Minab Massacre

The hearing saw heated exchanges, particularly when California Democrat John Garamendi lambasted Hegseth over the “astounding incompetence” that has led to “political and economic disaster at every level.” Garamendi rightly pointed out, “The president has gotten himself and America stuck in a quagmire of another war in the Middle East.” Hegseth’s furious retort, questioning Garamendi’s loyalty, only exposed the administration’s intolerance for truth and dissent.

More damningly, the issue of the brutal strike on a school in the Iranian city of Minab during the opening phase of the joint US-Israeli campaign was finally raised. Iranian officials reported at least 168 people killed, most of them children. Congressman Adam Smith of Washington highlighted the Pentagon’s initial promise of an investigation, followed by a two-month silence. “We made a mistake, and that happens in war,” Smith stated, adding, “Two months after it happened, we refused to say anything about it, giving the world the impression that we just don’t care.” This callous disregard for innocent lives is a hallmark of their aggression.

Empty Victories and Lingering Stalemate

Hegseth’s claims of “obliterated” Iranian nuclear facilities were met with skepticism, even from within his own ranks. When pressed by Smith on the contradiction – if the threat was imminent, and facilities obliterated, what was the point of the war? – Hegseth could only offer a vague “You’re missing the point.” Such evasions highlight the lack of clear objectives and the desperation of the administration.

Despite the partisan support from some Republicans like Nancy Mace, who inexplicably found herself “impressed,” the broader reality is a dangerous stalemate. Three US aircraft carriers remain in the Middle East, a provocative presence unseen in over two decades. Trump’s rejection of Iran’s offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for lifting the blockade demonstrates a preference for confrontation over diplomacy. The US finds itself isolated, with allies “gratuitously insulting them,” as noted by Adam Smith, even as they beg NATO to join their misadventure.

As Massachusetts Democrat Seth Moulton aptly put it, he was “expecting to hear a bunch of bullshit” from Hegseth. The American people, and indeed the world, deserve the truth about this costly and ill-conceived war.
