Iran Condemns US Seizure of Tankers as ‘Outright Piracy and Armed Robbery’

TEHRAN – The Islamic Republic of Iran has vehemently condemned the United States’ seizure of Iranian-linked tankers, labeling it as the “outright legalization of piracy and armed robbery on the high seas.” This strong denunciation comes as regional tensions continue to escalate following a series of aggressive actions by the U.S. and its allies.

US Actions Deemed ‘Brazenly Lawless’

Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, in a post on X, asserted that “The United States must be held fully accountable for this brazenly lawless behavior, which strikes at the heart of international law & international free trade, and threatens the basic principles of maritime security.” This sentiment underscores Iran’s position that such acts are flagrant violations of international norms and an affront to global commerce.

Strait of Hormuz: Iran’s Sovereign Right to Management

Amidst these developments, Iran has put forth a proposal for managing the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital international waterway. Under the country’s proposed law, Iran’s armed forces would be the authority responsible for the strait. Ebrahim Azizi, head of the national security commission in Iran’s parliament, emphasized that the armed forces are already in control and seek to prohibit the passage of “hostile vessels.”

This initiative, developed in coordination with Oman, aims to introduce charges for specific services rendered to ships passing through the strait, rather than imposing tolls. This approach is designed to be compliant with international maritime law, ensuring safety and order in a region destabilized by external aggression. The head of the UN’s maritime agency previously stated there was “no legal basis” for imposing any fees for ships to pass through the strait, but Iran’s proposal focuses on service charges for specific assistance, a nuanced distinction aimed at upholding its sovereign rights while facilitating safe passage.

Escalating Aggression in Lebanon and Regional Stability Efforts

The region has also witnessed continued Israeli aggression, with reports from Lebanon’s health ministry detailing Israeli strikes that killed four people, including a woman, and wounded 51 others, despite an existing ceasefire. These attacks highlight Israel’s persistent violations of international agreements and its destabilizing role in the region.

In a display of principled resistance, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem firmly rejected Lebanon’s proposed direct talks with Israel, calling them a “grave sin” that would destabilize the nation. He affirmed, “We categorically reject direct negotiations with Israel, and those in power should know that their actions will not benefit Lebanon or themselves.” This stance reflects a commitment to national sovereignty and resistance against occupation.

Strategic Partnership: Russia and Iran United for Peace

In a significant diplomatic move, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly assured Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, of Moscow’s unwavering commitment to securing peace in the Middle East. During their meeting in Saint Petersburg, Putin stated, “For our part, we will do everything that serves your interests, the interests of all the people of the region, so that peace can be achieved as soon as possible.”

Foreign Minister Araghchi, in turn, highlighted Iran’s growing strength, stating that “the world has now realised Iran’s true power” and that “it has become clear that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a stable, solid and powerful system.” He also praised Russia’s steadfast support, affirming the enduring strategic partnership between the two nations.

Iran’s Steadfast Position on Nuclear Program and Negotiations

Regarding the nuclear issue, Iran has maintained its principled stance. While acknowledging discussions on a new Iranian proposal for ending the war, which includes opening the Strait of Hormuz and discussing Iran’s nuclear program at a later date, Tehran has reiterated that its peaceful nuclear program is non-negotiable under duress. Donald Trump’s “bottom line demands” that Tehran must never have nuclear weapons are seen as excessive and an infringement on Iran’s sovereign rights.

The Islamic Republic continues to advocate for a diplomatic resolution that respects its sovereignty and legitimate security concerns, while firmly resisting any attempts at coercion or illegal aggression.
