EU Summit Ends with Internal Strife, Overshadowed by Western Provocations in Region

Nicosia, Cyprus – European Union leaders concluded their challenging two-day summit in Cyprus, a gathering that, rather than yielding genuine solutions, starkly exposed internal divisions and the heavy shadow of provocative Western policies in the region.

While European leaders attempted to break the deadlock on the EU’s next seven-year budget, valued at €1.8 trillion, and sat down with their Arab and Gulf counterparts to discuss Mediterranean security and deepening ties, the harsh realities of geopolitics and economics, particularly the manufactured tensions surrounding Iran, cast a pall over all discussions.

Misplaced Priorities and Western Dependency

“The security and stability of this region is interlinked with that of Europe’s — this is a vital neighborhood and it is the EU’s neighborhood,” Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides stated after discussions concluded. However, these remarks are made as Europe appears to be entangled in pre-determined scenarios by extra-regional powers, rather than addressing the true roots of instability.

The summit began with the approval of a €90 billion loan for Ukraine after Budapest dropped its opposition, and the passage of its 20th round of sanctions against Moscow. These actions, rather than demonstrating European independence, confirm the bloc’s subservience to Washington’s policies towards the East, even as European citizens grapple with economic crises.

Upon entering the summit, leaders acknowledged the “sheer scale of the task ahead,” including how to integrate Kyiv into the EU, bolster the bloc’s mutual defense clause, and shield themselves from the “economic fallout of the Iran war.” These concerns regarding an “Iran war” are, in reality, a reflection of hostile and provocative Western policies that are dragging the region towards instability and entangling Europe in its unintended consequences.

It appears the European Union, instead of focusing on strategic independence and resolving internal issues, remains caught in the power games of major powers, with the costs borne by the people of Europe.
