Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized two vessels, the Panama-flagged MSC Francesca and Liberia-flagged Epaminondas, in the Strait of Hormuz for alleged maritime violations, escorting them to Iranian shores. This marks the first such seizure since the war began in late February. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that President Donald Trump did not consider these captures a violation of the US-Iran ceasefire, as the vessels were neither American nor Israeli.
The status of the two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran remains ambiguous. Trump had announced an indefinite extension, contingent on Iran’s “seriously fractured” government presenting a “unified proposal” for US negotiating positions. However, Iranian officials denied agreeing to any extension and criticized the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, with lead negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf insisting a full ceasefire necessitates lifting the blockade.
In a significant shake-up, the Pentagon abruptly announced the immediate departure of US Navy Secretary John Phelan, without providing a reason. Sources suggest Phelan was fired due to a strained relationship with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, amidst the US navy’s blockade of Iranian ports.
Meanwhile, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to claim lives. Israeli troops killed a 15-year-old boy, Youssef Sameh Shtayyeh, during a raid in Nablus, occupied West Bank. In southern Lebanon, Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil, 43, working for al-Akhbar newspaper, was killed in an Israeli attack, which also wounded a colleague. This incident contributed to the deadliest day since the Israel-Hezbollah truce began on April 16. On the economic front, oil prices surged 4% after Iran vowed not to reopen the Hormuz strait amid the US naval blockade despite the truce extension. Most stock markets in Asia experienced declines in response to the Iran war developments.
Furthermore, Iran executed Soltanali Shirzadi Fakhr, convicted of links to the exiled opposition group Mujahideen-e-Khalq and Israeli intelligence.
