Iran War Latest: Two Container Ships Attacked by Iranian Gunboats

Escalating Tensions in the Gulf

Recent developments indicate a volatile situation in the Middle East. A UN envoy states that Iran is prepared for talks once the US ends its blockade, while oil prices have seen fluctuations following President Trump’s ceasefire announcement. Meanwhile, Iranian tankers are reportedly circumventing US blockades, and accusations of ceasefire breaches are exchanged between the US and Iran.

Maritime Incidents: Vessels Targeted

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a cargo vessel being fired upon approximately 8 nautical miles west of Iran. The ship’s master confirmed the vessel was targeted while outbound and is currently stopped, though all crew members are safe with no damage reported. UKMTO has advised heightened caution in the Strait of Hormuz due to increased activity.

In a separate incident, a container ship was reportedly attacked by a gunboat belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, 15 nautical miles north-east of Oman. The vessel sustained heavy damage to its bridge, but no fires were reported, and the crew is safe. Iran confirmed this attack, claiming the ship had “ignored repeated warnings,” according to Tasnim news agency.

Iran’s Oil Exports Continue Amid Blockade

Despite US threats and a naval blockade imposed on April 13, at least two fully laden Iranian tankers, the Hero II and Hedy, have successfully sailed out of the Arabian Gulf this week. Bloomberg, citing data intelligence firm Vortexa, reported these Iran-flagged crude carriers are part of a flotilla that has transported roughly nine million barrels of oil to the market. Vortexa’s figures suggest that at least 34 Iran-linked tankers and gas carriers have navigated through the Strait of Hormuz and the US blockade line.

Oil Market Volatility and Ceasefire Talks

Oil prices experienced a dip on Wednesday after an initial rise, as investors assessed the ceasefire extension announcement by Donald Trump and the resumption of peace talks between the US and Iran. Brent crude fell 0.8 per cent to $97.69 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate lost 1.09 per cent to $88.69 per barrel. Prices have remained volatile since the Iran war began, with hostilities causing spikes and peace talks leading to bearish impacts on supply prospects through the Strait of Hormuz.

Regional Tensions: Israel and Lebanon

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported continuous Israeli bombardment of homes, buildings, and mosques in Khiam, southern Lebanon. Israeli forces are also demolishing residential neighborhoods and infrastructure in border towns, reportedly to establish a security zone. These attacks follow a US-brokered ceasefire that came into effect last week.

The Israeli military accused Hezbollah of breaching the ceasefire by firing rockets at Israeli troops and launching a drone. Israeli forces retaliated by striking the launcher. The drone was intercepted before entering Israeli territory. Israel labeled these incidents as “blatant violations of the ceasefire agreement.”

International Diplomacy and Ceasefire Disputes

US Central Command (Centcom) affirmed its forces “remain ready” during the extended ceasefire, as stated by Admiral Brad Cooper. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reiterated support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in a call with President Joseph Aoun.

At the UN, Rafael Grossi, head of the IAEA, emphasized the complexity of ending the Iran war and the importance of continuity for peace efforts. Iran’s UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, urged the UN Security Council to intervene after the US seized the Iranian commercial ship Touska and detained its crew, calling it an act of piracy and a breach of the ceasefire. President Trump confirmed extending the ceasefire until talks are concluded, citing requests from Pakistani mediators.

However, confusion persists regarding the ceasefire’s exact expiry time, with differing reports from Pakistan, Iran, and the US. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of breaching the ceasefire by blockading Iranian ports and seizing a commercial vessel, calling these acts of war and greater violations.

UK’s Response and Regional Stability

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed fears of jet fuel shortages for UK travel. British officials are also planning an international military meeting to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
